EDF 5607: Social-Foundations Trends
Video welcome for all fall 2007 students
The full title is "Trends in the Social-Political Foundations of Schools in the U.S." Yes, it needs to change, but it'll do for now. Offered in fall 2002, spring-summer 2005, fall 2006, fall 2007. Draft syllabus from fall 2006 (August 21, 2006, version).
Notes to students registering for EDF 5607 for the fall 2007 semester: Please note that this course will be offered distance-learning only. Update (7/10/07): Based on multiple scheduling difficulties, the course will run asynchronously. There will be an orientation session August 25, 1-3 pm, on the Tampa campus in EDU 161, and all students registered for the course are encouraged to attend. I will do my best to make arrangements for those unable to come to the Tampa campus.
The one additional tool used in the course will be Yackpack, an asynchronous voice networking system that is Flash-based and requires a simple computer microphone and speakers/headphones. Yackpack is changing its subscription system, and I may choose to use Facebook to minimize student costs depending on Yackpack's cost structure.
The two books available through the campus bookstore are Hochschild and Scovronick's The American Dream and the Public Schools (2003) and Tyack and Cuban's Tinkering toward Utopia (1995). I think the total for new copies before shipping is about $37-38 for both books together.
Below are materials from a prior offering of the course. These will likely change by the start of the fall 2007 semester.
