EDF 3604Short Papers
Purpose
Twice in the first month, students will write a short paper in response to a specific assignment related to the reading. These assignments have several purposes:
- To encourage careful reading
- To assess student understanding
- To encourage careful explanatory writing
- To assess student writing
- To encourage students to think about crucial issues in the course
Each paper will earn ten points if it shows a good-faith effort to engage the topic and, for the second and third papers, if it discusses the readings in a substantive manner (even if with errors).
Topics per paper
"Ordinary evidence"—Describe the circumstances of an adult over 30 you know and how that person's life matches up against either Bowles' or Becker's article (due in Week 3).
"Identifying key issues"—describe the most crucial issues in the book you are reading. Make sure to include both the issues the author raises and also any additional issues that other authors from the course might discuss or additional issues you think are important (due in Week 5).
