EDF 3604—Course schedule

The following is a tentative schedule for the term week by week. All written assignments are due at the beginning of the Tuesday class for that week, unless otherwise stated. In all weeks there are on-line quizzes.

Week 1
Topics: psychological vs. social foundations perspectives on schooling and education
Week 2
Topics: Historical myths; origins of school systems
Reading: Coontz 1989
Due: "Designing a course" paper. (See assignments page for more details about the short reaction papers.)
Week 3
Reading: Becker 1993; Bowles 1972
Topics: Human capital and social reproduction theories; common-school reform
Due: "Ordinary evidence" reaction paper based one either Becker or Bowles (not both).
Week 4
Topics: Student failure: marginalization/deficit theories; gut-wrenching inequality
Reading: Fine 1986 and either Delpit, Kozol or Michie (through Introduction and "Skills and Other Dilemmas of a Progressive Black Educator" in Delpit and Chap. 1 in Kozol or Michie)
Week 5
Topics: History of (in)equality of educational opportunity
Reading: Delpit (through Papua New Guinea chapter),  Kozol (Chaps. 2-3), or Michie (Chaps. 2-5)
Due: " Identifying key issues " reaction paper.
Group activity basis: Kett 1977 or Graebner 1989 (See assignments page for more details.)
Week 6

Reading: Brown v. Board of Education I, II; Delpit (through end of part 2), Kozol (Chaps. 4-5), or Mitchie (Chaps. 6-8)

Teaching basis: Bell 1985
