  Welcome to the Career Laboratory

The purpose of this virtual career laboratory is to provide a venue for exploration of quality online career resources that pertain to self-assessment, career information, career searches and job preparation. Our hope is that this site will serve the community, aid in training counseling students by providing experience with online career resources, and provide the career counseling profession with information about the effectiveness of these type of resources through research.

The laboratory also addresses NCDA's Need for Research and Review
"Since the use of the Internet is new for the delivery of career planning and counseling services, it is mandatory that the career counseling profession gain experience with this medium and evaluate its effectiveness through targeted research (NCDA Guidelines for the Use of the Internet for Provision of Career Information and Planning Services, http://www.ncda.org/, retrieved 3/12/03)."

For an overview of our laboratory project, please visit our Project, presented at the Symposium of 21st Century Teaching Technologies: A Continuing Series of Explorations. USF, March 2003. (Summary)

The Career Laboratory aims to: a) train students in using Internet technology effectively; b) educate students about Internet-based career resources in the different areas of career counseling and guidance; c) evaluate the amount of career resources information achieved by our students: and d) provide a service to the global community.

Specific Goals
The Career Laboratory will enable students to achieve the following goals:

Learning: Familiarize students with the different areas of career education and the Internet-based resources available within them.

Proficiency: Utilize the resources in order to become knowledgeable about what they offer and become proficient in their use, to maximize the benefits they could obtain from those resources.

Assessment: Students will assess the resources in terms of quality, relevancy, accessibility, and user-friendliness of services provided.

Research:  Students will research the Internet for new resources in the area of career and guidance, work characteristic, and employment.

The information provided by the students’ assessments will be used to improve the laboratory content and activities, while the information provided by the students’ research would be used to update the laboratory.
