Completing a revolutionary Newsletter - political organizing, professional development, and lobbying tool.

Aloha Brothers and Sister:

I want to introduce one of my students, Mr. Brian Kajiyama, who is a graduate student in our program. Brian is physically-challenged and teaching me a great deal about a cultural population that is often viewed in disempowering ways. I feel fortunate to have developed a relationship with Brian in many ways... one of them is seeing his commitment to use his knowledge and skills in counseling to foster the development and empowerment of large numbers of persons who have experienced serious and disabling conditions in their lives. I know you will also benefit from working with Brian and simply shooting the breeze when we all get a chance.

I have talked about the work of the NIMC in general and the work the two of you - Carlos and Miguel - have been doing on the Newsletter with Brian (who also possesses a broad range of computer skills). In our discussions it has dawned on me that my thinking about the NIMC Newsletter and the numerous components that can be included in it represent a major challenge and tremedous promise for the work we are doing to revolutionaize the fields of counseling and psychology and to transform our society in ways that promote peace, and justice and a greater level of sanity in our world.

Among the things I have dreamed of doing is developing and launch a number of on-going e-books (electronic books), live time chat sessions with leaders in various aspects of the multicultural-feminist-social justice movements, providing multicultural resources for sale (Judy Daniels, Brian and I are talking about continuing our work in producing DVDs on using sport counseling strateies with physically challenged youngsters, counselors doing peace education, and a broad range of other topics. I would love to market Carlos's DVDs from the NIMCs tour in USF in this vein. Brian and I have also discussed having a large portion of the sales of such items (and these DVDs would be much less expensive than what is currently available from other for-profit distributers) going to scholarships and other non- profit multicultural, social justice organizations. Most importantly, I dream of having a site that serves the purpose of being a newsletter AND an organizing and mobilizing tool in the profession.

With these and many other ideas and potential strategies to use in this technology mode, I am convinced that I need to have close and regular access to managing the site where the newsleter is launched.

With this in mind I have consulting with Brian to use many of the ideas and logo that Carlos developed for the NIMC to develop a site here in Hawaii.

I want this to be the sort of the state-of-the-art multicultural- social justice technological website that becomes a model for others that are likely to appear in the future. With this in mind, I want to recruit from the "best' multicultural-social justice technology thinkers and doers I know. Having worked with Carlos over the past year and a half, I have not only come to know of his genuine commitment and skills and knowledge as a technological-multicultural- social justice advocate leader, but understand the role he can play in the development of this newsletter.

Miguel, becuase I have only recently come to know you, I do not have nearly as much clarity about your knowledge and skills in these areas ... despite our limited contact and knowledge of each other I have been very impressed from what I am learning about you in these e- mails and benefit greatly from the consultation we have had regarding the newsletter over the past several weeks.

If we are to proceed with developing and launching the newsletter from Hawaii I want to actively recruit both you Carlos and you Miguel as members of our editorial team. I want/need the two of you to play a major leadership role in the development of this component of the NIMC. I also want to invite Judy Daniels and perhaps one more female as part of the editorial team as well. I know tht some may say that is a lot of different people to have on an editorial team... but the way I look at it is that this strategy reflects our commitment to promote multiculturalism-feminism-and social justice in our practices.

In closing, I want to again thank both Miguel and Carlos for the work you have done... the ideas you have come up with ... and the possible formats fo rthe Newsletter Carlos. I want to plead with both of you to please accept my invitation to continue to work on this NIMC committee as we develop the sort of unique medium that will not only serve as a "newsletter" but that will also be a powerful organizing tool in our advocacy for multiculturalism and our continuing struggle for social justice inour world. In this regard I am asking if you would consider formally becoming a part of the editorial eladerhsip team on the NIMC's Newsletter?/

I look forward to your response to all of this at your convenience.

Peace,

Michael D'Andrea
