Update September 10 2004
Aloha:
Here is a quick update on the fantastic work persons in our group are
doing.
1. Paul Pedersen has set an initial draft summarizing the work many of you
are doing in promoting multiculturalism and social justice in the field. If
you have not yet sent Paul a short summary, please do so as we have gotten
numerous e-mails from persons who indicate that this information is very
helpful in learning about the many relevant actities that individuals are
engaged in.
2. Paul is also exploring the possibility of organizing a special
multicultural-social justice event at the upcoming ACA Convention in Atlanta
in March 2005.
3. One of our subcommittees has taking a lead in contacting organizers of
the Diversity Challenge, Roundtable, National Multicultural Summit, and APA
and ACA Conventions to seek their support in instituting a multiyear project
in which Town Hall/Plenary Sessions would be held at these important events to
promote the implementation of the APA Multicultural Guidelines and ACA
Multicultural/Advocacy Competencies into our training programs, research
endeavors, and clinical practices. You will be hearing more about the
excellent and important work of this subcommittee soon.
4. Discussions are underway concerning the possibility of re- initiating a
National Dialogue on Race. If you are interested in joining in the discussion
of organizing this on-going event, please send me an e-mail.
5. Finally, I am sending an attachment that contains an e-mail that I sent
to all faculty members and administrators in the College of Education and all
of the student sin the department where I work.
This attachment is designed to stimulate your thinking about some of the
activities you might initiate in your own workplaces as the presidential
election nears. It is also offered to encourage more discussion about the
excellent and creative things you are already doing at your own workplaces to
promote the linkages between democracy, social justice, peace, and education.
Have a great day, folks!!!

Sent to the members of the
College of Education at the University of Hawaii and the students in the
Department of Counselor Education
Aloha Everyone:
I hope you are having a great start of the semester. I am sitting
by my computer listening to a broadcast on Democracy Now about the
life, legacy, and death of Dave Dellinger (a renowned pacifist and
social justice advocate who gained much notoriety as one of the Chicago
8 who was arrested during the 1968 Democratic Convention. As I listen
to this broadcast, I thought I could honor Dave's work and
contributions to our society by sending you an e-mail to let you know
of a few of events/activities that several faculty members in the COE
are involved that are aimed at promoting the linkage between
education, democracy, and social justice.
First, faculty members are engaged in a voter registration drive that
is taking place on the Manoa Campus over the next few weeks. We will
have a table set up at the Campus Center on Thursdays and Fridays from
12:00 noon - 1:30 pm to register students, faculty, other staff
persons, and members of the general community who are interested in
taking advantage of this community service. We kicked off this effort
yesterday and more than 80 students either registered on the spot or
took voter registration forms with them to complete later. It was
very cool to see how excited and proud these young people genuinely
seemed to be at the prospect of exercising their right and
responsibility to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Second, we would be glad to come to your classes to take just 5
minutes to distribute voter registration forms to any student who is
in need of registering. If you are interested in having one of us
come to your class to help your students become registered voters,
please let me know and we will set up a time to do so in the next
couple of weeks. We will only need 5 minutes of your class time to do
so. The deadline to become a registered voter and vote in the
presidential election is October 4th.
Third, we will soon be announcing the next brown bag discussion
meeting in the COE. This is the third year we will be organizing
these discussion groups. As most of you know they involve having a
guest speaker present on a specific topic related to peace, justice,
democracy, and education which is followed by questions and comments
by the persons in attendance. The discussion groups have been well-
attended in the past - they go from 12:00 noon - about 1:00 pm. We
hope you can come to future discussion groups and will invite your
students to do so as well.
Lastly, one of the fantastic outcomes of the brown bag discussion
groups is the creation of a terrific website that focuses on a broad
range of educational, peace, and justice-related issues. Our very own
Dr. Buddy Burniske, in the Department of Educational Technology, is
the creator of this website... a site that several faculty members
have used in some of their distance learning courses/activities.
Please take a look at this site when you get a chance and extend a
word of thanks to Dr. Burniske for his work on this project when you
see him. You can go to the following address to access the "aloha
Now" website...
