Aloha, Thank you and moving forward!!!

Aloha Everyone:

and thanks to all of you who attended the July 28th meeting.  From all accounts, the folks who participated in that meeting were motivated by the issues discussed and the possible action strategies that were outlined by the 48 persons in attendance.  For those of you who were unable to attend the APA Convention in Hawaii, I want to make sure to take this time to keep you in the loop.

Although everyone seemed to be inspired by the unity among the persons who attended the July 28th meeting... everyone also asked..."Let's see what happens from here?"  The central question on many people's minds is "What sort of action will follow this meeting?"

Well, I want to briefly list the actions that are immediately in being put into motion....

1. As all of you know... organizing a group like this requires countless hours of volunteer work at a computer to sent up a communication system from which we can operate as a group of like- minded individuals.... so the first action strategy that is being taken right now is to update our list serve and e-mail addresses....

This is taking a great deal of time but is an important initial action that must be done.... If you think of other people who need to be included on the e-mail list that is sent to you OR if you want your name deleted from this list so you will not be bothered with information we will be sending out... please let me know.

2. At the July 28th meeting, we received 11 names of persons who have been nominated to participate in a National Planning and Implementation Committee... After all of these persons have been contacted and asked if they would serve on this national committee, you will receive an e-mail that includes their names and e-mail addresses.

3. Members of National Institute for Multicultural Competence (NIMC) are in the process of collating the suggestions for future actions that came from the small work groups that were assembled at the July 28th meeting.  We will be sending this summary to the National Planning and Implementation Committee (once this committee has been finalized) for their review, feedback, and action.  You will be soon getting this summary as well.

In closing I want to again thank you all for your interest in this effort to promote social justice in the fields of counseling and psychology by finding ways to implement the multicultural competencies and guidelines in our training programs, clinical practices, research endeavors, and local communities in ways that foster justice and peace.

As I indicated at the July 28th meeting, I will be stepping down from the position of initial coordinator of this effort and serve as an advisor/consultant/ and support person to the National Planning and Implementation Committee.

I believe we have a tremendous potential to move the fields of counseling and psychology towards higher levels of social justice and multicultural competence by complementing the work that is being done by many allies in the existing structures of our organizational associations AND BY remaining an independent body that is unencumbered by the politics of these organizations (e.g., APA, ACA, etc.).

Together we can and will make change happen!!!

In the continuing struggle for justice and peace,

Michael D'Andrea
