            Working with coaches and student-athletes in providing a broad range of sport counseling/consultation/training and instruction services that are intentionally designed to foster athletes’ peak performance and develop in the athletic, personal, and academic domains.

            Provide a broad  range of psychoeducational, counseling, consultation, and training services that are designed to enhance college-athletes personal, academic/career, and athletic development.
Among the specific services provided to basketball, football, and baseball players at the University of Hawaii include: instructional services (I co-teach Group Leadership courses for the college athletes), student advising, visualization, biofeedback, relaxation training, career/personal counseling consultation, testing, and other performance enhancement services.

            This interdisciplinary graduate program was developed to meet the needs of teachers who are interested in securing a master's degree in education.  An initial pilot program was offered to teachers who work and reside in Kauai in 1994.  The first cohort of students in this program completed their studies in December of 1996.  A second cohort of graduate students from Maui participated in the second IMED program offering from 1997-1999. 
            As one of the program's two co-coordinators, I was responsible for conducting a needs assessment of those teachers who expressed interest in applying for the program, calling meetings with faculty members participating in this project, monitoring and assessing program development efforts, and fulfilling the administrative duties that accompany the proper operation of the IMED program.

            Extensive counseling experience in individual, group, and marriage and family counseling settings utilizing a developmental approach to intervention.  Expertise in multicultural, diverse population counseling.  Provided comprehensive clinical services including career counseling, child abuse counseling, parent/family counseling, crisis intervention, and pro-active lifespan counseling.
            Provided clinical and educational services in an Adult Day Treatment setting.  Developed an Adult Education curriculum and taught classes twice a week for seven years with psychiatric clients.  Topics covered in the Adult Education curriculum included nutrition, decision-making skills, communication skills and interpersonal awareness training, rape and sexual abuse prevention, human sexuality, human growth and development, vocational development, and learning to deal with racism and other forms of discrimination in contemporary society.
            Secured funding and administered a state subsidized vocational development project designed to assist psychiatric patients with a diagnostic history of schizophrenia to develop job-readiness skills.

Description: This state-wide research project was designed to assess the effectiveness a utilizing a new, comprehensive, school-based violence prevention training program among teachers, administrators, and counselors who are employed in the Hawaii public school system.

Title: Multicultural counseling outcomes: A comprehensive study in the field of counseling.  Principal Investigator.
 
Description: This study is designed to assess the level of effectiveness multicultural counseling interventions.  By conducting a comprehensive review of the professional literature, a critical analysis will be made of those empirical studies that have been published and report on the outcomes of counseling and psychotherapeutic services offered among clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Title: Investigating College Students' Attitudes Towards Gay and Lesbian Persons: A  Multicultural Perspective: Co-Investigator.
 
Description: A culturally-diverse sample of college-aged students attending a large,  public university were surveyed concerning their level of knowledge about and attitudes towards gay and lesbian persons.  The finals reflected no significant differences in terms of students cultural background, age, or religious affiliation regarding their attitudes towards gay and lesbian persons.
 
Title: Assessing Adult Concerns: A Multicultural Analysis; Principal Investigator.
Description: This study investigated the types of concerns reported by a culturally-diverse group of adults living in Hawaii.  By first administering a survey             consisting of 28-items which focused on a variety of issues adults are likely to be concerned, the investigator conducted a factor analysis on the participants' responses to determine if specific patterns and trends were noted in the types of concerns adults experienced.
 
Title: Assessing the developmental strengths, needs, and concerns of children and adolescents in South Africa.
Description: This study was designed to serve a two-fold purpose.  First, the investigators were interested in assessing the psychological and educational needs of school-aged children and youths in South Africa.  Second, the study sought to investigat the types of intervention strategies which are currently in use or are being planned for the future to address the psychosocial and educational needs of the youths in South Africa.

Title: Promoting political awareness and activism among school counselors
in Hawaii; Co-Investigator.
Description: This study examined school counselors' awareness and willing to actively engage in advocating for legislation that directly impacted professional             counselors in the State of Hawaii.  A random selection of school counselors were provided information regarding current legislative bills which related to the work counselors do in Hawaii and encouraged to contact their state representatives to discuss their support for these bills.  An experimental-control group research design was used in this study.
 
Title: Using a focus group to explore the professional development needs of elementary, intermediate, and secondary school teachers in Hawaii; Principal Investigator.
Description: This study was designed to evaluate the needs of professional educators in Hawaii.  The results of this investigation were used in planning and implementing a new graduate-level program for public school teachers at the University of Hawaii.
 
 
Title: Exploring the career self-efficacy of poor women in Hawaii; Principal Investigator.
Description: This study tested a theoretical model of the career self-efficacy among a large, culturally-diverse group of poor women in Hawaii.  Over 3,000 women participated in this study by completing a newly developed test designed to measure adult career self-efficacy.  A factor analysis of their responses resulted in a four-factor model of career self-efficacy among the participants.
 
Title: Assessing the impact of a group intervention among homeless mothers and their children (Honolulu, Hawaii); Co-Investigator.
 
Description: This study involved developing and assessing the impact of a group counseling intervention with homeless children, adolescents and their mothers.  Specific attention was directed towards increasing the participants level of self-esteem, coping skills, and sense of family cohesiveness.

Title: Assessing the determinants of adolescent worries: A multicultural study (Honolulu, Hawaii); Principal Investigator.
Description: This investigation involved confirming and validating the four theoretical domains (i.e., personal, peer, family, and social/moral) of worries that have             commonly been presented in the adolescent psychology literature.
 
Title: A cognitive-developmental model of racism (Honolulu, Hawaii); Principal Investigator.
Description: This qualitative study investigates the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of racism from a cognitive-developmental perspective.
 
Title: Promoting proactive social skills among elementary school-age children (Aliamanu Elementary School); Principal Investigator.
Description: Evaluating the impact of a school-based program designed to promote elementary school-age students social skills.  ** Note: The program that was evaluated in this study was developed by the principal investigator.

Description: One hundred ninety five (195) surveys were mailed to the directors of accredited counseling programs across the United States.  The survey was designed to assess the various ways in which counseling programs deal with students who manifest personal problems that are likely to interfere with their professional work.

July 1988:                   Submitted to the W.T. Grant Foundation request for funding to expand the research component of the adolescent pregnancy prevention project initiated by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College.  Funding approved for $207,000.00 for twelve months.  Co-investigator.

 

January 1988:             Submitted to the Tennessee Department of Mental Health request for funding for an alcohol and drug prevention component to be added to the adolescent pregnancy prevention project at Meharry Medical College.  Funding not approved.

 

May 1986:                  Submitted request for funding to the Carnegie Corporation of New York for long term, research-based, primary prevention project to reduce the rate of adolescent pregnancies among inner-city youth.  Funding approved for             $750,000.00 for forty-two months.  Co-investigator.
