State Comparison

Texas is
the country's second largest exporting state after California.

Among the top 10 exporting states, six California,
Texas, Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania
experienced growth in exports during 1999 compared to 1998.

Twenty-one of the fifty states, including New York,
Washington, Florida, and Ohio experienced declining exports
during 1999.

Texas
maintained its perennial position as the nation's largest
exporting state to Mexico, accounting for 47.6 percent of all
U.S. shipments to Mexico in 1999.

With 14.0 percent growth in 1999, Texas exports to
Mexico expanded somewhat faster than in California, where
Mexican shipments grew by 11.8 percent during the same period.

Both Texas and California, however, expanded their
exports to Mexico in 1999 by a faster rate than the 10.2
percent growth rate for U.S. shipments to Mexico during the
same period.

In South America, Texas exports to the major markets
of Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia all registered declines
during 1999 (although Brazil and Colombia did show signs of
stabilization in the second half of 1999). Texas exports of
industrial machinery to Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina were
sluggish during 1999, while industrial machinery shipments to
Venezuela plummeted over forty percent over the past year.
Chemical shipments rose slightly in Colombia and Argentina
from 1998 to 1999.
