Creating Teaching Opportunities from Critical Events:
A Symposium on Schooling during the Immigration Debates.
|
Our first "Creating Opportunities from Critical Events" included a set of 3 forums implemented to
discuss the impact on education of Latino students and their
families' responses to the immigration laws debate.
The forums provided opportunities to learn about a variety of perspectives
on the critical event. Participants were invited to respond
to a set of parallel questions on the critical event. These
questions included:
-
From your
(disciplinary/institutional) perspective, what are the key
issues for schools raised by (the critical event)?
-
What options are
available to schools in responding to (the critical event)?
-
From your
(disciplinary/institutional) perspective, how might schools
choose among these options?
There was an essay competition for students writing about
the critical event. The winner of this competition, Ms. Gloria
Harvey, was invited to present her paper as part of the
end-of-fall symposium (Forum 3).
Bradley University joined us for forums 2 and 3, and Dr. Beto
Davison Aviles, Associate Professor of Education at Bradley
University was the faculty speaker in Forum 3.
The discussions were videotaped and edited to provide video
and audio podcasts to the college.
Please click on the links on the right column of your screen to

Forum 2
The COEDU Diversity committee
hosted the second symposium in the series,
Creating Teaching Opportunities from Critical Events, on
October 20, 2006 at 12:00 pm in the “Kiva” EDU 347. Dean
Colleen Kennedy provided the opening remarks. The panelists
included: James Gatlin, Principal, Middleton Senior High
School, Marie Hill, Chair and Professor, Educational
Leadership, Vivien Oliva, Bilingual Guidance Counselor, Ken
Otero, Deputy Superintendent Hillsborough County Schools,
William Person, General Director for Pupil Placement and
Support Programs, Hillsborough County Schools, David Steele,
Principal, Plant City High School and Alyne Unterberger,
Activist.
The goal of this initiative,
sponsored by the COEDU Dean’s office and COEDU Diversity Committee,
is to establish an ongoing dialogue among COEDU members, school
districts, students, and the community about learning from
critical issues influencing education. This event provides a
great opportunity for us and our students to learn from the
diverse perspectives of school professionals.
Forum 3
The COEDU Diversity committee
hosted the final forum in the series, “Creating Teaching
Opportunities for Critical Events: Schooling during the
Immigration Debates” on Monday, December 4, 11:30 am – 1:00
pm in the TECO Conference Hall. The event included
participants from the College of Education, families,
community groups, students, and the student essay winners.
The panelists include: Dr. Harold Keller, Moderator, Mrs.
Gladys Moreno, Parent Advisory Council member, Mrs. Lupe
Lamas, Nurse, San Jose Mission, Mrs. Julieth Escobar,
