FORUMS 2006
Creating Teaching Opportunities from Critical Events:
A Symposium on Schooling during the Immigration Debates.

Our first "Creating Opportunities from Critical Events" included a set of 3 forums implemented to discuss the impact on education of Latino students and their families' responses to the immigration laws debate.

The forums provided opportunities to learn about a variety of perspectives on the critical event. Participants were invited to respond to a set of parallel questions on the critical event. These questions included:
  • From your (disciplinary/institutional) perspective, what are the key issues for schools raised by (the critical event)?
  • What options are available to schools in responding to (the critical event)?
  • From your (disciplinary/institutional) perspective, how might schools choose among these options?

There was an essay competition for students writing about the critical event. The winner of this competition, Ms. Gloria Harvey, was invited to present her paper as part of the end-of-fall symposium (Forum 3).

Bradley University joined us for forums 2 and 3, and Dr. Beto Davison Aviles, Associate Professor of Education at Bradley University was the faculty speaker in Forum 3.

The discussions were videotaped and edited to provide video and audio podcasts to the college. Please click on the links on the right column of your screen to access the podcasts.
