EME 6930 Web Programming 1

HOW TO GET A PERMIT TO TAKE THE CLASS ONLINE

1. Thanks for your interest in Web Programming 1.  The general course prerequisites are: graduate standing, OS fluency (MS Windows 95/98 or MacIntosh OS or equivalent), and fluency with applications (wordprocessing, email, web browsing, database, etc.)  These are the only prerequisites for the on-campus section, which requires no permit to register.

2. A Distance Learning section of Web Programming 1 is offered as a convenience to experienced programmers who wish to extend their knowledge to Web Programming.  Individuals should not seek permission to take this course unless they are already competent programmers in at least one high-level language. (HTML is not a programming language. "High-level" refers to languages such as BASIC, C, Java, Pascal, Logo, etc.)  Existing competence as a programmer allows such individuals to acquire knowledge of Web Programming through independent study that is directed by the instructor via web-based materials and email interactions.   Hence, special prerequisites for the Distance Learning version are:
1) previous course work in high-level programming OR other programming experience that established knowledge of basic data structures (e.g. scalar and arrayed variables) and basic control structures (e.g. if, case, for, do.);
2) email and the ability to use it to send messages with attachments;
3) some previous experience with HTML;
4) your own web space at which you already know how to publish web pages;
5) a Windows 95 system (or later)
6) Willingness to come to Tampa one time for the final exam.

To request a permit for the distance learning section, please send an email to wwwprog@tempest.coedu.usf.edu describing in some detail how well these prerequisites apply to you. Please be as specific and detailed as you can about item #1. If you also include your student ID number in the message it will save you a later step in the registration process, but do not include it if you do not wish to have it retransmitted by me in unencrypted format.

3.  You must take the course on-campus if you do not possess the prerequisite skills and knowledge for the distance learning version.

4.  If you possess all the prerequisites except #1 (programming), you have reason to believe that you can succeed in the course, and it is absolutely impossible for you to take the on-campus section, then consider the Karel the Robot option.
