Information for International Students

Expenses

Please note that the costs below are in addition to the other costs listed under Money/Expenses.

Student Health Insurance is mandatory for all international students. In the 2005/2006 school year the annual fee for this coverage was approximately $1150.  However, this cost may increase.  In the 2005/2006 school year, students who had graduate assistantships only paid $550 towards this fee and the university subsidized the rest of it.  However, there is no guarantee that this cost sharing arrangement will continue.

In addition to the fees all graduate students have to pay, International students will have to pay an International student fee for maintenance of the SEVIS system.  In 2005/2006 this fee was $50.  However, this fee may increase for the 2005/2006.

List of things to do

Note: This is not a comprehensive list of things to do.

If international students need a bank, the USF credit union is a convenient choice. Students can open accounts based on their student status. They may be required to bring their passports and other items with them when opening the account. (Having a US social security card will help expedite the process). If students have an assistantship they can have their salary directly deposited into their account at the credit union http://hbs.creditunion.usf.edu/

International students should obtain a Social Security Card. This is easier if they already have a job offer (such as an assistantship). Instructions and location to apply for the card can be obtained from the International Student Office (This information might also be on their website) http://web.usf.edu/iac/isss/

If International students plan to live off campus, many complexes require students to have a US. citizen or permanent resident co-sign on their lease. If they do not have access to such an individual they may be required to pay a larger deposit.

On campus housing information can be found here http://reserve.usf.edu/

You are strongly encouraged to read the information on the website of the the International Students and Scholars Office (ISS).  This website contains important information for international students.  The website is http://web.usf.edu/iac/isss/    The phone number for ISS is (813)-974-5102.
