Car/License

Find out everything you need to know about driving in the Sunshine State at Florida’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.  Here’s some info to get you started.

  • GET YOUR LICENSE ASAP because you are considered an in-state student one year after you get your Florida Driver's License (important for tuition purposes your second year). At the very latest, get a Florida license BEFORE orientation starts.  Make an appointment at a Tampa area DMV to get your Florida License.
  • When you get to the Tampa area DMV page, scroll down to the Motor Vehicle Services (County Tax Collector).  This section gives phone numbers and locations to offices that can register your vehicle and issue you Tags.  (Most of these offices only take cash; make sure you ask before you visit them.)
  • Regardless of whether you live near campus, you will need a reliable car to travel back and forth to your practicum site which will (usually) be located between 20-25 minutes away from campus.  You will be paired with another student from your cohort, so you will be able to carpool but your partner is not impervious to sickness which could leave you without a ride if you don’t have a car.

Car Insurance
  • You will be required to get Florida Car Insurance in order to register your car. Ask other students which insurance they use or search the Internet. A good site that compares different company prices for an area is Progressive.com.  Depending on where you are coming from, you may pay more or less for car insurance than you have previously.  Rates will differ depending on where you live in the bay area.

Auto Tags
  • You will be required to change your tags to Florida tags. Depending on your state, you will have different deadlines to do this.  For example, if your state requires an inspection, you have until the time that your inspection and registration is due for your car in your respective state.
  • You will need the following to register your car in Florida:                                                                         http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/dhsmv/newflres.html  - this is the official site for what to do
    • Florida driver’s license
    • Title of car
    • Florida proof of insurance (see next section)
    • A form that verifies the current reading of your car’s odometer. The auto tag office can mail this form to you or you can pick one up. Any car dealership can fill it out for you at no cost.  They may also be able to fill it out for you there.

Parking

USF requires a parking permit. You can get one for the whole year. They can be purchased online (and will be sent to you) or from the parking office when you arrive. It is recommended to buy your parking permit online as the line may be extremely long during the first weeks of class.  We recommend taking care of this before you arrive for orientation.

At the US Parking Information site:
Go to Parking Permits in the left menu. Click Buy Online.

  • When buying the permit, you are a non-resident student (unless you have already been a Florida Resident for one full year)
  • Another tip is that if you do receive a parking ticket that you feel is unwarranted; you can appeal it through this website.
