CONFERENCE 22nd
ANNUAL FLORIDA LITERACY Register at: www.floridaliteracy.org Workshop Description: Hundreds of adult and family literacy practitioners, tutors and adult learners will come together this May 3-5 for the 22nd Annual Florida Literacy Conference. Conferees will have their choice of over 70 workshops within eleven learning tracks presented by local, state and national educators.
The festivities kick off on May 2nd with several pre-Conference workshops: Best Practices and Certification with TABE, Ruby Payne's Frameworks for Poverty, Study Circle on Research-Based Adult Reading, and a Study Circle on Health Literacy. Also on May 2nd will be Train the Tutor Trainer, as well as a workshop on administering the Best Plus literacy assessment tool.
For our Opening General Session, we are pleased to welcome Mayor of St. Petersburg, Rick Baker along with keynote speaker, David Boulton. As director of the Children of the Code project, his session will benefit anyone interested in deepening their understanding of literacy and the negative effects of prolonged literacy learning difficulties. You can learn more about the project at www.childrenofthecode.org/comments.htm.
May 3rd is Adult Learner Day in which students can attend the conference for free. An adult learner committee is once again coordinating this event. Students won't want to miss it!
Join us May 4th for the Florida Literacy Awards Banquet where outstanding programs, adult learners, volunteers, businesses and literacy leaders will be recognized.
At our first-ever Closing Luncheon, published poet and teacher, Elizabeth Thomas, will discuss how poetry may be taught to advance literacy while encouraging self-awareness, creativity and the connection to a larger world.
Thanks to the generous support of Florida TechNet, two computer labs will be available for workshops and checking e-mail. Special thanks to the Florida Department of Education, Publix Super Markets Charities, the Orlando Magic, ProLiteracy International and Verizon for their generous support. ______________________________________________________________________
