Multiple Intelligences and the ESOL Learner

Workshop Description:
All human beings have Multiple Intelligences (MI) which can be nurtured and strengthened, or ignored and weakened. This online session will explore how Multiple Intelligence theory can be applied in practical instructional classroom activities for ESOL learners. It will also explain the relationship between the literacy level of the ESOL learner and the development of MI in linguistically diverse student populations.
At the conclusion of this session individuals will be able to understand the elements of Multiple Intelligences (MI), explain the relationship between the ESOL literacy level and MI, and demonstrate MI activities for ESOL Learners.

Workshop Description:
TABE 601 is informational only and designed specifically for administrators of Adult Education and Career and Technical Education programs. (It is NOT intended for practitioners seeking certification to administer the TABE). The content will stress federal and state rules on how to assess adult and CTE students, using proper testing procedures. Additionally, the recently updated Technical Assistance Paper for Assessment will be reviewed in depth. Discussion will focus on how administrators can best support state-wide efforts to accurately assess adult education students and make good educational decisions based on a thorough and accurate understanding of how to interpret TABE results. Attendance at this workshop is a 'must' for new adult education administrators who want to ensure their organization's compliance with state and federal assessment guidelines.

Staying Healthy: A New Health Literacy Curriculum and Student Resource Guide for ESOL

Come learn about a free, newly developed curriculum which integrates health literacy into high beginning and low intermediate level Adult ESOL instruction. These materials will increase health literacy awareness among your students and encourage them to make healthy choices in relation to nutrition, preventative health care, accessing health services, and other related issues. The curriculum also provides useful information about the US Health Care System and Florida health resources.
Presenter:Martha A. Lane, Adult Literacy Consultant. A contributing author to Staying Healthy, Marti has had many years of experience as an ESOL tutor, trainer, and curriculum writer. She has been involved in community-based ESOL projects overseas, nationally, and in Florida -- particularly in Pinellas County.

Many students have learned the five-paragraph essay structure; however, the essays they produce are inadequate (level 1) or marginal (level 2). At the heart of the issue is the inability of students to write effective sentences and paragraphs. This writing workshop will focus on strategies to assist students in developing more effective paragraphs, as well as how to analytically score a student’s writing. Participants attending this interactive workshop will be provided with a resource guide and workbook that include numerous strategies and activities that can be used in the classroom.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Testing…Teachers! When your student(s) fails –You fail. When one of your students fails to improve – you have failed. Research indicates that on average a 10% improvement can be attained with effective application of teaching strategies preparing the students for TEST TAKING. Not teaching the test, but the how to take a test. Your students (YOU) may not improve 10%. The odds are that many will improve more, and all will improve some. Not theoretical ideas, but specific tools for the teacher.

Research has shown that students learn more and retain knowledge and skills longer if instruction is provided using authentic materials and tasks. This workshop is designed to provide ABE/GED teachers with strategies, activities, and resources that can be used to help students be more successful on the GED Tests. Teachers will learn what areas of the GED Tests present the greatest challenges for students; understand how the use of authentic materials, such as the newspaper, can help students master skills in all five content areas of the GED Tests; and participate in hands-on learning activities that use authentic materials developed as part of Florida’s Read About It! curriculum. Each teacher will receive a copy of Florida’s Read All About It! curriculum and master copies of all support materials, including a Read All About It! Student Workbook.

Workshop Description:
Taking Adult Education Students to the Next Level Most teachers have not had the opportunity to obtain expertise in the area of reading. This reading workshop provides a basic overview of the different components of reading, as well as teaching strategies for each area. Hands-on activities are incorporated into this reading workshop on how to teach fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Techniques such as the various types of word lists, the GIST, and SQ3R are demonstrated. In addition to pertinent FLDOE policy updates, this training provides participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to train participants on how to present information about human trafficking as part of their classroom activities. The workshop was developed by attorneys from the FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, and by adult ESOL teachers. Participants receive materials ranging from hands-on exercises and lesson plans to information on human trafficking laws. The benefits of this workshop is that teachers and students become aware of this important issue, to show teachers and students how to protect themselves from traffickers, and to hopefully prevent others from becoming victims. The flyer from FSU says “Florida is third in the nation in number of human trafficking cases within our borders. Educators have a unique and important role to play in helping to address this tragic reality.”
