Case Statement
Mission
The mission of the Professional Development
School program is to sustain an ongoing interactive partnership
devoted to continuous improvement in the quality of life and
learning in a diverse educational community.
Vision
The Professional Development School is a unique
collaborative effort among King High School, University of South
Florida and the community to enable all teachers and students to
reach their potential.

Current In-place Programs (1999)
- Dr. Jeff Golub: currently offers a methods
class in language arts, allowing pre-intern teachers
access to classrooms and the opportunity for personal
contact teaching.
- Dr. Terence Cavanaugh: Dual enrollment
course: Intro to Educational Technology a current
requirement for entry into any state education college
- Dr. E. Watts/Ms. A. Lasley research grant:
into Effects of Sustained Silent Reading of Young Adult
Literature on the Reading Attitudes of At-Risk
Adolescents.
- Janet Scagelonie/Beth Burgess: Methods
courses in business
- International Baccalaureate students use
USF facilities
Future Goals & Objectives
- Goal: To broaden the
horizons of the King/USF Faculty & Students in
Journalism and the Arts
Objective: To have the ability to
allow for cross interactions of drama, art and journalism
programs, workshops, and speakers.
- Goal: To establish link
between King and USF
Objective: providing weekly/monthly
information about activities at each school
- Goal: Build a
communication network between the two schools
Objective: be aware of who can be
worked with between the two schools as resources.
- Goal: Have USF Faculty
and Pre-service teachers be aware of what actual current
teaching situations are.
Objective: Have student teachers be
able to apply their education to an educational setting.
- Goal: Create greater ease
of integration of interns and Pre-interns to local High
School
Objective: Adoption of similar
teaching tools between USF & King HS
- Goal: To expand the
technology resources at King High School
Objective: Expand services to the
whole high school in technology as it impacts curriculum.
- Goal: Increased
professionalism of staff in current technology and trends
Objective: Provide courses or
workshops at King to provide up-to-date instruction.
- Goal: Establish informal
communication links and relationship building
Objective: Host a social between USF and King faculty and
staff
- Goal: Awareness of
current trends in the reform movement of mathematics
education
Objective: To present current and future
teachers with strategies and alternatives in math
education
- Goal: Increase
students abilities and success rates in foreign
language
- Goal: Encourage students
as lifelong language learners and increase foreign
language enrollment
- Goal: to improve the all
King students in reading
Objective: Need to have continuing
communication/collaboration between USF/King concerning
reading instruction strategies.
- Goal: Improve school
self-management and programs through the school
improvement committee.
Objective: Have USF faculty member
attends school improvement program meetings and assist.
More goals to be developed from
other departments.Administration:
develop the intern program to include school
startup/shutdown aspects of teacher actions and
responsibilities. Change the intern program to
include: have students actually attend or add
this aspect as part of the senior seminar program
(or part of the new seminar program)
USF COEDU:
develop check sheets forms to create intern forms
as part of their portfolios that have the
supervising teacher sign off on when an
intern/pre-intern goes to a class and shows a
behavior.

- Implement CRISS strategies training
- Training in technology for KHS faculty

- Work with FCIT to offer series of technology workshops at
King
- Have funding/subs available for King teachers to attend
FCIT workshops
- Offer clinical education class/training to teachers to
all for interns and pre-interns (18 hrs)
