This course examines current trends and issues in middle grades mathematics. Its major focus is to familiarize teachers with developments in this rapidly changing field, with particular attention given to curriculum issues arising from state, national, and international assessments. (only for MAT)

This course examines issues related to communicating in mathematics, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It satisfies the reading in the content area mandate for certification.

skills appropriate to pre-secondary school years.
MAE 6945 Practicum in Mathematics Education (3)
PR: Admission into a graduate level certification program in mathematics education.
This practicum provides individual in the MAT program in Mathematics education with early field experiences in mathematics classrooms at the middle or high school levels, depending on the program of study.

This course examines in depth topics from probability and statistics appropriate for middle grades mathematics teachers, including historical connections. Topics studied include data collection and display, measures of central tendency and variability, use of tree diagrams to find probabilities, independent and dependent events, combinations and permutations, and sampling procedures.

This course examines in depth advanced functions topics, basics concepts of trigonometry, and the foundations of calculus. Topics studied include functions (specifically logarithmic, trigonometric, and rational) sequences and series, rates of change, tangents, derivatives, integrals, and applications of the derivative and integral.

This course examines in depth algebra content appropriate for middle grades mathematics teachers, including the use of technology to study algebra and historical connections to algebra. Topics studied include patterns, functions (linear, quadratic, exponential, and polynomial), systems of equations and inequalities, and applications.

This course examines in depth geometry content appropriate for middle grades mathematics teachers, including the use of technology to study geometry and historical connections to geometry. Topics studied include fundamentals of geometry, tw0- and three-dimensional figures, transformations and isometries, basic measurement properties of perimeter, area, and volume.
