- Grades K-12. Four (4) semester hours in methods of teaching the subject to include credit at the elementary and secondary levels for Art, Dance, Computer Science, Foreign Languages, Health, Humanities and Music. (Because most courses are either elementary or secondary, some K-12 coverages will require two (2) courses.)
- Middle grades (5-9) and secondary (6-12). Two (2) semester hours in methods of teaching the subject at the appropriate level for each middle grade or secondary subject.
d) Electives to bring total hours in professional preparation courses to 20 or use practical teaching experience to waive remaining hours (see note* below.)
(2) Practical experience in teaching. Practical experience in teaching may be satisfied by one (1) of the plans listed below:
a) Six (6) semester hours earned in a college student teaching program or in a supervised internship completed in an elementary or secondary school. (USF’s NCATE accreditation prevents us from providing internships to anyone not admitted to one of our education degree-seeking programs.)
OR
b) Equivalent of two (2) years of full-time teaching experience with a temporary certificate in a public, or state-supported nonpublic elementary or secondary school or in a pre-school school which is operated by a public school district.
(NOTE: *Once the practical teaching experience requirement has been met, two years of teaching (3 hours for each year) can be used to waive the remaining hours toward the total 20 hours required in professional preparation.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be aware that obtaining teacher certification by way of course-by-course analysis DOES NOT constitute a “state-approved teacher education program.” This may cause problems should you move to another state. The interstate or reciprocal agreement between states applies only to state-approved teacher preparation programs, which at USF would lead to a degree in education. If you choose this option, you may be not be eligible for certification in another state without additional work.
