The USF College of Education's Excersise Science Program Recognized by ACSM
TAMPA (May 9, 2005) – The USF College of Education’s Exercise Science Program has gained national recognition. The program, housed in the School of Physical Education, Wellness, and Sports Studies, recently received the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Endorsement, which is held by only one other school in Florida.
Endorsement requirements call for specific qualifications establishing standardized curricula that are focused on the knowledge, skills, and capabilities essential for the examinations used by ACSM for certifications. Lead by Dr. JoAnn Eickhoff-Shemek in the School of Physical Education, the newly endorsed and revised Exercise Science program is a result of a year’s work by graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The revised program will begin Fall 2005.
ACSM endorsement is sought voluntarily by accredited colleges and universities to recognize institutions that cover the “knowledge, skills, and abilities established by ACSM.” Benefits of the endorsement for the University, College, and Program include: feedback to faculty about student performance on ACSM credential examinations; increased marketability of the University to prospective students and increased student marketability to employers; assistance in curricula planning, evaluation, and revision; and continuing education and professional development for faculty and students.
The ACSM began in 1954 and the college credentials programs began in 1975; ACSM has certified over 25,000 health/fitness and clinical exercise physiology professionals.
