The Tampa Bay Area Writing Project (TBAWP): An Example of USF's
Community Engagement
The Tampa Bay Area Writing Project (TBAWP) is a local site of the National Writing Project and is an example of USF's community engagement. TBAWP was founded in 1998 at USF under the leadership of Dr. Pat Daniel. TBAWP is a professional development model of teachers teaching other teachers.
Each summer up to 20 of the area’s finest teachers (K-12, in each content area) are selected to attend a five-week Invitational Summer Institute. Each Fellow becomes a Teacher Consultant and, having studied the research and honed his/her skills as a writer, provides leadership to other educators by demonstrating best practices in the teaching of writing. Seventeen teachers from Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, and Hernando School Districts are beginning the fourth week of TBAWP’s 2009 Invitational Summer Institute.
Showcase of Professional Development Offerings
TBAWP will be hosting a Showcase of the Class of 2009’s professional development offerings on Thursday, July 23rd, at 10:00 in EDU 317. The public is invited.
Annual Fall Conference
TBAWP hosts an annual Fall Conference for educators throughout the area. This year’s conference will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, from 8:00 am–4:00 pm in the College of Education.
TBAWP hosted professional development in-services consisting of a series of five three-hour workshops in 11 schools during the 2008-09 school year. To book on-site professional development for a school or district, contact Dr. Pat Daniel at pdaniel@tempest.coedu.usf.edu.
