Lisa Witherspoon Hansen Named to the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame

TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 11, 2009) – Lisa Witherspoon Hansen, Ph.D., was recently named to Virginia Tech’s Sports Hall of Fame.  During her years at Virginia Tech, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science and physical education, Hansen made school history by breaking records in assists and steals and earning a reputation as one of the school’s most popular and dynamic women’s basketball players.

Dr. Lisa Hansen
Known for her perseverance and toughness, Hansen continued to play on many occasions despite injuries.  Suffering a broken nose in a game during her sophomore year didn’t stop her from managing nine assists that helped to propel her team to a win.   She continued to excel and finished the season with a spectacular record.  As a junior, she continued to play in 30 games despite a stress fracture in her foot and finished the season with 200 assists, breaking another school record.  She was instrumental in helping her team win the Atlantic-10 conference championship that year and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Hansen is a 2009 USF College of Education alumna with a Ph.D. degree in Curriculum & Instruction in Early Childhood Education.  She is now an instructor in the School of Physical Education and Exercise Science and also co-directs two research labs. One of the labs, housed in the School is the XRKade Research Laboratory, an 1800 sq. ft. teaching and research facility established to investigate and promote the use of active gaming technologies.   The other is a school-based XRKade lab at Witter Elementary School in the Hillsborough County Public School system.

Being inducted into the Hall of Fame at Virginia Tech is an amazing honor that I am very blessed to receive,” said Hansen. “… my success is largely due to the talent and teamwork of my team members, and the support from my family ... They should be accepting this award on my behalf.”
