Three College of Education Students Awarded National Scholarships

Ms. Cindy Ibarra, a junior majoring in Early Childhood Education and Ms. Ashley Parkhurst, a senior majoring in Early Childhood Education, have each been awarded a Gilman Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom for the 2014 summer semester.  They will observe and learn about the culture at an elementary school affiliated with the University of Cambridge and the USF Cambridge Schools Experience.

Ms. Kelly Brabant, a junior majoring in Social Science Education and minoring in political science, has been accepted to the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) summer intern workshop and associate program at the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. The IRT is a highly selective program committed to increasing diversity in the nation's teaching faculties by identifying and mentoring members of underrepresented groups through the graduate admissions process.

Dr. Liliana Rodriguez-Campos, Associate Professor in Educational Measurement and Research, is recipient of the 2014 Jerome Krivanek Distinguished Teacher Award, presented by the USF Faculty Senate in recognition of outstanding teaching.

English Education graduate Joanna Fox, Creative writing teacher at Booker Middle School in Sarasota, is winner of the Center for Environmental Literacy’s River of Words Poetry and Art Competition Teacher of the Year Award. The award recognizes educators who engage their students with environmental awareness through poetry and literature.


Dr. Danielle Dennis Selected as Co-leader of Phi Delta Kappa International Study Tour

Dr. Danielle Dennis, Associate Professor of Literacy Studies, has been selected as co-leader of Phi Delta Kappa's international study tour this fall. Dr. Dennis will lead the tour to Paris and Amsterdam with Kappan editor in chief Joan Richardson. The tour is a professional development opportunity for educators to meet with education leaders in each city.

College of Education Professor Receives Patent for iMapBooks

Dr. Glenn Gordon Smith, Professor in Instructional Technology, has received a patent for his technology, iMapBooks, which combines books with computer games.

COEDU Faculty Explain Common Core Standards on Daytime Morning Show

Dr. Gladis Kersaint, Dr. Deborah Kozdras, appeared on the Channel 8 Daytime morning show to dispel myths about the new Common Core Standards for grades K-12 in mathematics and language arts, and explain how the new standards differ from previous standards.

USF Preschool for Creative Learning earns Four-Star Rating from Quality Counts for Kids, Hillsborough County's continuous quality improvement program for early childhood education.

College of Education signs Memorandum of Understanding with Minzu University of China

The MOU allows Masters students in Chinese language education from Minzu to come to USF for one year and graduate with a dual Masters from Minzu University and USF - College of Education with an M.Ed., concentration in Foreign Language Education. This agreement has been about two years in the making.
