Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies

Effective August 7, 2010

The Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies at the University of South Florida is seeking a scholar/educator for appointment to a 12-month tenure track position effective August 7, 2010. 

The Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies has 20 full-time faculty members and offers degree programs at the undergraduate, MA, Ed.S, and Ph.D. levels. Our faculty are dedicated to research-based pedagogy and the lifelong development of professionals in Literacy, Early Childhood, and Elementary Education. The department’s mission focuses on research that advances knowledge and promotes social, cultural, educational, and technological development; teaching that makes life-long learning in student-centered environments possible; service that is based on academic excellence, social justice commitments, and a strong ethic of community responsibility in areas related to education; and community engagement that builds and reinforces university/community/business partnerships and collaboration. Responsibilities

The Chair will have responsibilities for leading, organizing, and maintaining the personnel and other resources in the department to meet departmental goals. These goals include delivery of instruction in curriculum at the Bachelors, Master’s, Specialist, and Doctoral levels. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Education. The Chair will provide leadership and support for research, publishing, professional activities, and external funding that promotes the development of new knowledge and innovative practices; represent the Department at regular meetings and other planning sessions with college or university-wide implications; and engage in professional organizations at the state, regional and national levels. Close alliance with service area school districts that are some of the largest in the nation is an important responsibility. Other departmental duties of the Chair include (1) facilitating progress toward the college¹s strategic directions; (2) planning cycles of courses to deliver degree programs on the Tampa campus; (3) managing budgets; (4) supervising standing committees that include tenure and promotion, annual review, adjunct credentialing, and graduate credentialing committees; (5) overseeing admission to and completion requirements for all degree programs; (6) maintaining program approval and accreditation standards as required by the state of Florida and accreditation by SACS and NCATE standards; and (7) providing leadership for the Department's fund raising activities.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Earned doctoral degree in Literacy, Early Childhood, Elementary Education, or a related discipline
  • University record of teaching, research and scholarly work commensurate with appointment at the Full Professor level with tenure according to USF’s standards (http://files.acad.usf.edu/facprogdev/5464.pdf)
  • Outstanding record of research, scholarship and publication

Preferred:

  • Successful experience in program development and administrative duties, including fiscal management and budgeting, supervision, development, strategic planning, program assessment and faculty evaluation
  • Strong record of external funding
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity and experience and/or knowledge of urban education
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in school districts, state departments of education, and universities
  • Demonstrated experience with appropriate accreditation agencies
  • Experience in mentoring faculty
  • Demonstrated commitment at the national level to appropriate disciplinary professional organizations
  • Demonstrated competence with technological forms of communication

Salary:  Negotiable, competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
