Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education

Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies

Effective August 7, 2010

The Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies at the University of South Florida is seeking a scholar/educator in early childhood education for appointment to a 9-month tenure track position effective August 7, 2010. 

The Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies has 20 full-time faculty members and offers degree programs at the undergraduate, MA, Ed.S, and Ph.D. levels. Our faculty are dedicated to research-based pedagogy and the lifelong development of professionals in Literacy, Early Childhood, and Elementary Education. The department’s mission focuses on research that advances knowledge and promotes social, cultural, educational, and technological development; teaching that makes life-long learning in student-centered environments possible; service that is based on academic excellence, social justice commitments, and a strong ethic of community responsibility in areas related to education; and community engagement that builds and reinforces university/community/business partnerships and collaboration. Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate level and graduate levels, mentor doctoral students, pursue research with high relevance for school and classroom settings, and participate actively in service to the profession and the university communities.  We seek an emerging scholar, who is interested in creative collaboration with our campus preschool and other partner schools, and an outstanding teacher in early childhood education who can conduct innovative and socially responsible research.  The undergraduate program has a strong developmental approach, emphasizes integrated curriculum, and utilizes a cohort model. Graduate programs have an emphasis on child advocacy and social justice.  USF is committed to diversity and welcomes both candidates from underrepresented populations and those who have a research agenda focused on issues of multiculturalism.  Further, the department serves elementary education (K-6) and P-12 literacy programs in addition to early childhood education, and offers multiple opportunities for interdisciplinary scholarship.  The candidate has an opportunity to make significant contributions to emerging programs in Early Childhood Education.

Qualifications

Required:

  • An earned doctorate in Early Childhood Education or a related area of specialization as of date of employment. ABDs accepted but all degree requirements must be met by position start date of August 7, 2010.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in work with programs for young children
  • Potential for success in research, grant writing, and other scholarly activities
  • Commitment to integration of technology into teaching and learning.

Preferred:

  • Evidence of collaborative professional experiences (e.g., school partnerships, research teams, etc.)
  • Demonstrable experience in working in diverse school settings and with under-represented populations
  • Evidence of focused research agenda and publication record
  • Demonstrable commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry, community engagement, and or global impact
  • Research and/or teaching related to multicultural issues, ethnicity, and cultural/linguistic diversity
  • Experience obtaining external funds
  • Experience integrating new digital technologies into instruction
  • Strong preparation in one or more of the following areas: emergent literacy, mathematics or science education

Salary:  Negotiable, competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
