Assistant Professor, Science Education

Department of Secondary Education

Effective August 7, 2010

The Department of Secondary Education at the University of South Florida is seeking a scholar/educator in science education for appointment to a 9-month tenure track position effective August 7, 2010. 

The Science Education Program in the Department of Secondary Education currently has four faculty members and offers degree programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. levels. The program has a strong tradition of quality teaching and mentoring, research and scholarship, commitment to diversity, and service to colleagues within the College, University, K-12 schools, and professional associations. Research interests of the faculty include the nature of science; socioscientific issues; educational reform and change processes; cultural, language, and gender diversity in science education; environmental science; qualitative research including action research; and science teacher education and professional development. The Science Education Program has growing links with STEM education programs in the USF School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Engineering. Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in science education for the elementary, middle, and secondary teacher education programs; engaging in an active program of research and scholarship; participating in grants and STEM initiatives; advising graduate students; serving on doctoral committees; and providing service to K-12 schools and professional organizations, as well as within the College and University.

Qualifications

Required:

  • An earned doctorate in Science Education (or closely related field). ABDs accepted but all degree requirements must be met by position start date of August 7, 2010.
  • Prior relevant K-12 science teaching experience;
  • Evidence of potential for an active program of research and scholarship.

Preferred:

  • Evidence of superior teaching ability, including integration of technology and teaching diverse learners;
  • Evidence of experience working well as a member of a collaborative group;
  • Evidence of potential for success in grant writing;
  • Evidence of experience in teaching science education courses, including elementary, middle grades, and/or high school methods courses;
  • Evidence of work in the area of STEM initiatives;
  • Evidence of participation in grant-funded research experiences.

Salary:  Negotiable, competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
