Dr.
Alvarez McHatton is an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Special Education at the main campus. Her research interests
include teacher preparation with an emphasis on secondary special
education, experiential learning, and participatory action research
focused on youth empowerment. Dr. Alvarez McHatton is also interested
in issues of marginalization, stigma, and discrimination of
youth of color, specifically Latina/Latino students. Her work
is grounded in school-university-community partnerships.
Dr.
Alvarez McHatton teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses.
She received the Provost's Commendation for Outstanding Teaching
by a Graduate Teaching Assistant in 2004. Prior to joining the
faculty, Dr. Alvarez McHatton was a special education teacher
and worked with students with emotional/behavioral disorders.
She is a National Board Certified Teacher in special education,
mild/moderate exceptionalities, and a Professionally Recognized
Special Educator.
Dr. Alvarez McHatton
received her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Her
dissertation titled "Stigma and discrimination: Interaction
of culture, disability, and single mother status of Mexican
and Puerto Rican mothers of young children with disabilities"
received USF's 2004 Outstanding Dissertation Award.
