Dr. James L. Tramill joined the University of South Florida’s College of Education as an Associate Research Professor in the Fall of 2005. Since joining the USF Special Education Department, Dr. Tramill has written or assisted in writing of 5 grant proposals funded for a total of over four million dollars.

Before joining the USF faculty. Dr. Tramill worked as an Associate Professor in the Institute for Educational Research and Public Service in the School of Education at the University of Kansas. In this role, Dr. Tramill worked with school district though out Kansas and faculty from various professional schools within KU. He supported K-12 teachers and university faculty in obtaining well over $20 million of grant funding.  Dr. Tramill facilitated development of federal grants addressing a variety of topics including 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Music/Arts in the Schools, Teaching American History, Transition to Teaching, Teaching Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology, Reading First, and Smaller Learning Communities. He also worked closely with the Kansas State Department of Education to facilitate development and evaluation of the Kansas State Improvement Grant.

Before joining the faculty at KU, Dr. Tramill was the Executive Director of a State agency charged with developing and implementing the Blueprint for Kansas Children, Youth and Families from 1993-1997. The State of Kansas and the Annie B. Casey Foundation jointly funded the Kansas Corporation for Change. Dr. Tramill also served as a tenured faculty member in educational psychology at Wichita State University (1980-1992) and as an elementary school educator for 1968 to 1976.

Dr. Tramill has published articles in referred journals in the areas of experimental psychology and cognitive and personality factors relating to student achievement and presented his research at national and international conferences in psychology and special education.

Dr. Tramill currently serves as Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) for a U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Research and Innovation grant (Student Characteristics and School Contexts that Impact the AYP Status of Students with Disabilities as a Subgroup) and two OSEP grants for the preparation of leadership personnel (Leadership in Teacher Education for Special Education), and (USF Leadership in Special Education Administration).
