Prior to coming to USF, Dr. Paul was a Professor of Special Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as Chair of the Division of Special Education in the School of Education at UNC for seven years and Acting Dean for one year. He came to USF in December, 1988 as Chair of the Department of Special Education and served in that capacity until 1996.

Dr. Paul served for one year as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard and for one year at Stanford University. He has written or edited 25 books and over 75 articles and chapters. His writing and research have focused on emotional and behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, special education policy, families, and ethics. His current research and writing are in the areas of narrative, ethics, and philosophies of research.
