Dr. Shaunessy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education, and serves as the Coordinator of the Gifted Education Program. She received her B. A. in English from the University of Miami, her M.A. in English from Florida State University, and her Ph.D. in Special Education with an emphasis in Gifted Education from The University of Southern Mississippi. At USF, Dr. Shaunessy teaches in the online gifted program, which offers courses leading to the graduate certificate and master's degree in gifted education.

Her research interests include gifted children with Asperger Syndrome, culturally diverse gifted learners, the use of technology in gifted education, and public policy in gifted education.

Prior to teaching in higher education, Dr. Shaunessy was a high school teacher of Advanced Placement Language and Composition and other courses in secondary language arts, where she taught gifted learners, general education students, and students with disabilities.  In 1999 she earned National Board Certification in English Language Arts for Adolescents and Young Adults.
