Doctoral Program Mission Statement

The mission of the University of South Florida Special Education doctoral program is to prepare leaders who will integrate the roles of researchers, teacher educators, and school leaders to improve the lives of children with identified or suspected special needs and their families with an emphasis on working in partnership with urban schools and other child caring institutions to accomplish systemic change.

Guiding Principles

The doctoral program is guided by two overarching principles:

  • Recognition of the accelerating impact of diverse demographics, and political and economic discontinuities among the social systems within which persons live in urban settings,
  • Awareness of the growing complexities of urban education and challenges in meeting the needs of children with special needs and those at risk of failure and their families
