Department of Special Education
Doctoral Program
Mission Statement
The mission
of the University of South Florida Special Education doctoral
program is to prepare leaders who will integrate the roles of
researchers, teacher educators, and school leaders to improve
the lives of children with identified or suspected special needs
and their families with an emphasis on working in partnership
with urban schools and other child caring institutions to accomplish
systemic change.
Guiding Principles
The doctoral
program is guided by two overarching principles:
- Recognition of the accelerating impact of diverse demographics,
and political and economic discontinuities among the social
systems within which persons live in urban settings,
- Awareness of the growing complexities of urban education
and challenges in meeting the needs of children with special
needs and those at risk of failure and their families
