WebQuest Title:  The Ancient Olympic Games

Student's Assignment

Introduction:

The ancient Olympic Games, part of a major religious festival honoring Zeus, the chief Greek god, were the biggest event in their world. They were the scene of political rivalries between people from different parts of the Greek world, and the site of controversies, boasts, public announcements and humiliations.

Tasks:

Your job is to discover some key differences between the original Olympics and modern Olympics, and give a detailed report to your classmates. You may choose to research the role of women in the Olympics, the different types of games played, or the reasons the games are played. You must compare and contrast the ancient Olympics with the modern Olympics.

Process:

Choose one of the following topics to research:

1. The role of women in the ancient Olympics vs. the role of women in the modern Olympics.

2.  The reasons why the Olympics were played in ancient Greece vs. the reasons why the Olympics are played today.

3. The games and contests that were held in the ancient Olympics vs. the games and contests that are held today.

Then, write a two page paper detailing your findings. Be sure to compare and contrast the events that occurred in ancient Greece with events that occur today. Use a Venn Diagram to visually illustrate your report. Be prepared to give an oral presentation to the class.
