Unit Summary:

    Goals/Objectives:

  1. Students will gain a better understanding of the impact of the New Immigrant on American society.

  2. Students will explore the daily life of the New Immigrant.

  3. Students will develop a presentation based on the life of the new immigrant and be able to demonstrate an understanding of their motivation for immigrating and how their lives were changed.


    NCSS Theme:  

  1.  Explore and describe similarities and differences in the ways groups, societies and cultures address similar needs and  concerns

  2.  Give examples of how experiences my be interpreted differently by people from diverse cultural perspectives and frames of reference

  3.  Compare ways in which people from different cultures think about and deal with their physical environment and social conditions.


    State Standard:  

  1.  Understands the social and cultural impact of immigrant groups and individuals on American society after 1880.(SS.A.5.4)

    Content:

             The focus of this unit will be on the daily life of the immigrant and their initial experiences in the United States.


    Methods:

            Direct instruction, individual reading of primary documents and biographical materials, Power Point presentation, journaling, graphic organizers.

WebQuest  Summary:


    Goals/Objectives:

  1.  Students will research the experiences of immigrants from different cultural backgrounds.

  2. Students will develop journals based on their interpretation of the experiences of the immigrants.

  3. Students will present their findings in the form of a skit.


    Days: 3


    Content:

         The focus of the webquest is the interaction of the immigrants with their new surroundings and the thoughts and feelings they experience in their new country.

Attention Getter Show picture of Statue of Liberty and poem "Bring me your tired..." Have students journal about what they believe to be the meaning.  Statue of Liberty Poem
KWL Students will begin a KWL chart that can be added to as the unit progresses.  
Feedback Lecture Introduce idea of "The New Immigrant". Discuss who the new immigrants were and some of their reasons for immigrating.  
Discussion Questions Students will answer discussion questions to gauge comprehension. Handout

KWL Students will continue working on KWL. Add information from lectures.  
  Link to www.ellisisland.org and allow students to research their ancestors. Discuss origins of students families.

Jigsaw groups Supply students with one of four articles relating to the journey to the United States. Students will  read silently then discuss with their like group and then with students with the three other articles. Embarkation, Journey, Fires and Shipwrecks, Disease
Journal After discussing their articles students will reflect on the journey and create a journal entry.

Pair Share Students will read Emma Goldman's account of her immigration to the United States and her subsequent deportation. Have them then work with a partner to answer the discussion questions. Review answers with the class. Emma Goldman's account
