Summary of Masters Programs

Students Seeking a Masters degree who are Certified/Licensed

The M. A. is for individuals who are certified usually to teach science at the middle or high school level. Candidates have a degree in science education or education and a Professional Certificate; or are certified (A Professional Certificate) by the state of Florida based on university course work and two years of experience (not a school district non-credit training program). These candidates will be required to take 18 hours of coursework at the graduate level in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) which also qualifies them for teaching at the community college level.


The M. Ed. is for individuals who are certified usually to teach science at the middle or high school level. These candidates have a degree in science education or education and a Professional Certificate; or are certified (A Professional Certificate) by the state of Florida based on university course work and two years of experience (not a school district non-credit training program).


The M.A.T. Science Education is for individuals who want to teach science at the middle or high school level. These candidates have a degree in a science discipline (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) that is taught in a middle or high school, or a closely related field and are NOT certified (although they may have a temporary certificate) and do not have a degree in education or science education.
