Graduate Certificate

The Graduate Certificate is intended for students with degrees in a social studies teaching field who are considering a career as a teacher of social studies.

  • Coursework may be used toward an MAT; for certification for 6-12 social science education directly by the Florida Department of Education (FDOE); or by a school district training program.
  • Up to 12 credit hours of courses of the Certificate will be applied toward the MAT requirements if taken within 7 years of the awarding of the MAT degree.
  • Only 3 credits taken while a non-degree seeking student may apply to the Certificate. If more than three credit hours are taken, the student will have to take additional courses to meet the total credit hour requirement for the Graduate Certificate.
  • The GPA from the Certificate may be used to enhance a student's prospects for admission to the MAT. Students should apply only if they have no less than a B in each course taken with no Ws while a certificate student.
  • A significant advantage that Graduate Certificate students have over non-degree seeking students is that they can register with the degree seeking students.
  • Students who take the certificate courses (or their undergraduate equivalents) while an undergraduate are not eligible to enter the Graduate Certificate program.

Financial Aid. Nondegree or Graduate Certificate enrollment is NOT considered considered "Degree Seeking" for financial aid or loan deferment purposes

Majors and Prerequisites for Potential MATs

Students who enroll as a nondegree seeking student or Certificate student in anticipation of being admitted to the MAT program should do so only if they have an undergraduate degree in a social studies teaching field. See MAT Admissions
