Social Science Education Internship
SSE 4940/6947
All school districts require finger prints and will conduct a background check prior to assignment of the final internship. Some districts also require drug testing.
Application & Assignment Process
Undergraduates
and MAT students must have a full-time internship
in order to complete their degree programs. It is almost
impossible to continue working a full-time job (other than
teaching, see paid internship below) to complete the course.
An original score report for the Professional Educator Exam and the Subject Area Exam (Social Science 6-12) indicating passing scores must be on file with the COEDU Graduate Office priro to Internship.
- You will apply in early January for the upcoming fall and in early June for the upcoming spring in which you intern.
- Internship is usually your last semester. You may have some courses left to take in the semester following internship and you can take one course in the internship semester, although it is not recommended.
- You will need to have at least a 3.0 for masters students and 2.5 for undergraduates.
- You must have passed all sections of the GKT.
- You choose a county in the Tampa area in which you wish to intern.
- You will need to pass a criminal background check and be finger printed.
- The school district will assign you to either a middle or high school to teach social sciences courses.
- You will have an "in-school" supervisor. This is a social sciences teacher whose classes you will eventually take over during the semester.
- You will have a "university" supervisor who will visit and observe you during the semester. Both supervisors have the dual role of mentor and evaluator and will assign your grade.
Internship Clearance
Students who have not cleared all deficiencies before the start of internship or who have not been cleared as an exception by the Associate Dean of Educator Preparation will be pulled from their internship placements and must re-apply for internship during a subsequent semester.
Examples of such deficiencies include:
- An approved Planned Program of Study form on file (Applies to MATs, not Undergraduates).
- Missing GKT some or all scores.
- Incomplete or Missing Grades.
- Unsatisfactory Grade Point Average
- Too many courses left to take after the internship.
Undergraduates
Courses Completed. Undergraduates must have 2/3 of the social sciences courses work completed and ALL of their education course completed.
MATs
Courses Completed. Your program of studies will be planned so that all course work will be completed prior to your internship. However, should there be a need for an exception, MAT students may take one 3-credit course during internship --- although this is unadvisable given the full-time nature of that teaching experience and one 3-credit course after internship. The only courses that can be taken during or after internship are :
- SSE 6932: Special Topics
- SSE 6636: Current Trends
Early Release An early release request is only appropriate in cases in which the internship is the student’s final course. Students seeking to be released early from internship should:
- have no coursework pending other than internship and must not have any incomplete grades
- have submitted passing scores on ALL section of the FTCE and GKT
- have already submitted a Graduate Degree Graduation Application before the official deadline for the semester in which the Early Release is sought
- have completed at least 10 weeks of internship
- submit the completed Early Release Packet to Dianne Wood in the Internship Office
- check with the Cashier’s Office to make ensure that their accounts are paid in full as transcripts and diplomas are not mailed for students who owe the university money.
There
are two kinds of Internships:
1.
Internship which is a "Preservice" internship
, meaning it is taken prior to a person entering
service as a teacher. This is the one described above
and which 95% of our students complete. This is the only option for undergraduates, go to Internship.
2. "Paid"
internships (MAT students only) are
available to students who are employed by
a school as a teacher of social sciences. Such students
must apply for an internship like all other students and must
complete an additional Paid Internship Application, making
sure to heed application deadlines. This second application
includes a specification of the particulars of your teaching
position.
Additional Criteria for Paid Internship:
Paid internships are not automatic. Paid internships
can only be approved for exemplary graduate students.
Particular emphasis is placed on the Professional
Disposition having been demonstrated during course work, irrespective
of the final grades earned. Students must have affirmatively demonstrated maturity, self-sufficency, professionalism,
and exceptional academic acumen throughout their course
of study.
In addition, the social
sciences education MAT applying for the paid internship
must, at a minimum:
- meet
all the criteria for the Preservice Internship,
- exceed
the SSE Professional Disposition criteria,
- have a temporary Teaching Certificate.
- have completed SSE
methods courses with A's and no drops, W's or I's,
- have completed all
testing like CLAST, GKT, and FTCE as required on the program
plan based on date of admission,
- have
a minimum of a 3.5 overall gpa,
- have
the support of the program faculty,
- have at least three
social sciences courses as part of their middle or high school
teaching load, and/or have at least 50% of their instructional assignment in the social studies, and
- have
a qualified supervisor who:
is certified in the student's
area of specialization
has taken state-approved clinical education training,
or
in a private school setting (comparable credentialing experience),
has taught successfully for at least three years,
is willing to observe the student's teaching, and
is readily available as a mentor.
In paid internships student are working as teachers with at
least three social sciences courses as part of their assignment.
They register for the same 6 credit hour internship course
(SSE 6947) as do other students. A university supervisor visits
them as they do for other students, but they - obviously -
do not take over someone else's classes and their in-school
supervisor is often the principal, assistant principal, or
social sciences chair. Paid interns need less supervision
because they are successfully operating as a teacher.
