Social Science Education Program Requirements

The Social Science Education Program of the USF College of Education (COEDU) is a NCATE, FDOE, and NCSS approved program. For students to have the benefits of such a program, there are special assessment and reporting requirements that students and instructors must meet. A number of required COEDU courses (not courses in other colleges) will have assignments identified as Critical Tasks. For each Critical Task, there will be an "artifact" (such as a lesson plan, etc.) that students must submit. The Critical Task Artifacts are delineated at SSE Bachelor’s and MAT programs for each course that has been designated to include a Critical Task Artifact. Students will submit the Critical Task Artifact through Chalk and Wire after he/she has enrolled in Chalk and Wire and set up a SSE ePortfolio.

COEDU offers a full support system of seminars, e-mail inquiries, a walk-in help center, and phone assistance to assist you in learning the system and completing the ePortfolio.

See right sidebar for Information about these services >>>

Student Deadlines for SSE Courses’ Critical Tasks

Time is of the Essence

  1. SSE Program Standards Acknowledgement Form
    Within one week of the first class meeting, in SSE 4333/5331, SSE 4334/5332, and SSE4600/5641, students must submit the SSE Program Standards Acknowledgement Form to confirm their having signed up for Chalk and Wire and they know how to upload the artifacts.
    1. If not received by the end of the third week, your professional disposition points will be affected.
    2. You are to verify that you uploaded and sent it for assessment to your instructor at the end of the 4th week by going to Chalk and Wire, "My Results" where a "P" for present for this artifact should be present.
  2. SSE Critical Tasks
    1. Submission of Artifacts (don't forget to complete all 4 steps)
      Students must:
      1. Upload their artifact
      2. Select the option to submit for assessment
      3. Select the instructor of your course to assess your artifact
      4. Submit the artifact for assessment
    2. Critical Tasks Deadlines:
      • The deadline will appear in the syllabus, but generally must be submitted concurrently to the instructor (in paper form, unless it is an online course) AND to your ePortfolio based on the deadline date in your syllabus.
      • If not submitted concurrently to Chalk & Wire, will result in a reduction by one letter in your course grade.
      • If not submitted by the scheduled final exam date (whether there is an exam or not) for the course, you will receive an F in your University course grade and will have to re-enroll in the course and complete all requirements anew.

 Assessment of Critical Tasks

  1. The Accreditation Evaluation System (AES) is separate and distinct from the university grading system. It is based on:
    1. 5 for Excellent;
    2. 4 for Good;
    3. 3 for Average;
    4. 2 for Poor; and
    5. 1 for Failure
  • Students must receive a 3, 4 or 5 in the accreditation grading system in EACH Critical Task submission to pass the course and earn a degree.
  • AES grades are posted at the same time as the final grades for the course.
  • Students should log on to their ePortfolio to check the AES grades.
  • If a student fails the course, even if the Critical Tasks Artifact would have earned a 3 or higher on the AES scale, no score will be recorded and the student will have to resubmit a new Critical Task Artifact next time he or she retakes the course.

Quality of Work for SSE Courses

  1. 1st Submission. Students who fail to earn a 3-5 in their initial submission of a Critical Task will either:
    1. Be assigned an F grade in the course at the discretion of the instructor.
    2. Be allowed, at the discretion of the instructor and based on an assessment of professional disposition at that time, prior work, and the quality of the submission, to resubmit a passing, revised artifact within a week of notification of their grade. The initial course grade for the submission will not change due to the resubmission. The resubmission will be only for the purpose of meeting the minimum 3 score of AES, the highest AES grade possible for resubmission. If the Critical Task is at the end of the semester, the student will be assigned an F in the course until and if a second submission is evaluated and it is appropriate to change the Critical Task grade and course grade.
  2. 2nd Submission. Students who fail to attain a score of 3 (highest grade possible on a resubmission) on their second submission, will be assigned an F grade in the course.

Students, in such things as lesson plans, where supplemental documents (such a primary documents, maps, etc.) are required as part of the paper submission to the instructor, you do not have to scan and include such documents to your ePortfolio. The Narrative will suffice. Check with your instructor who has the discretion to specify which documents are required.

Course Completion & Retaking A Course

At the end of a SSE course with a critical task, students must have no less than a 3 score on the Critical Tasks for the course or they will be assigned an F grade in the course. F grades given on this basis will not be subject to an appeal for change of grade based on a later submission.

The student who fails a course will be required to re-enroll in the course in a future semester and complete all requirements, anew. Program policy is that students must enroll in the course, but not with the same instructor.
