SSE 4936 Senior Seminar

Effective Fall 2008 and due to the dire fiscal situation of higher education in Florida (the lowest per capita funding and tuition in the United States), your Senior Seminar is being consolidated into one course for all Secondary Education Majors.

Welcome

Welcome to your Senior Seminar.

The purpose of the Senior Seminar is to assist you in making the transition from college student to the teaching profession. Other programs may use the senior seminar for other purposes, so at your general orientation some of the general comments should be considered in this context.

Except for the first two mandatory meetings, this is a self-paced, independent study course delivered through Blackboard with an Employment Portfolio as the final product.

All information in this course will be delivered by Blackboard.

We recognize what a busy semester you will have during your internship. Hopefully this information will be helpful to you.

  • Your internship is crucial. Many graduates get their first job offers based on the excellence they demonstrate during the final internship. Your Cooperating Teacher (the high school or middle school teacher who will supervise you daily) and your University Supervisor (the person who will visit and observe you on four or more occasions) are potentially the most important people who can possibly serve as a reference for you.

  • How quickly you progress in your internship from observer to taking over the Cooperating Teacher’s courses will depend a great deal on your own initiative and ability to apply the knowledge and skills you learned in your classes. The assessment of your confidence and ability by your Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor is crucial to your progress.

  • The Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor are the professionals that are there to help you overcome the challenges and surprises that you may encounter during your internship, not the instructor of this course.
