SSE 4335 Teaching Social Studies Themes
and
SSE 5946 Practicum in Social Science Education
Students should go to Blackboard for the official information on the course in the semester you take it. You should only use forms from Backboard.
Clincial Instructors, please go to the Clinical Instructor Page for additional information.
The 10 NCSS themes (http://www.socialstudies.org/standards/strands) are to be used as an organizing scheme for the Microteaches and Lesson Plans required in SSE 4335 & SSE 5946. Students must demonstrate that they have taught all ten themes in a minimum of five separate Microteaches at an assigned middle or high school. At the semester’s first class meeting, students will be randomly assigned to a middle or high school Clinical Instructor.
MicroTeaches are in Hillsborough County Only - No Exceptions. With the cooperation of the Hillsborough County Social Studies Curriculum Supervisors, exemplary social studies faculty supervise the first teaching experiences of preservice teachers. Students from other counties or campuses must plan on teaching at the Hillsborough County school to which they will be assigned.
Expectations - No Exceptions
- First Class Meeting - See Fall 2009 Schedule. Requirements & Grading
- Course Prerequisite:
- SSE 4333 Teaching Middle Grades Social Science with a "C-" or higher grade or

MAT Students Special Note
MAT students who are employed as full-time teachers on a temporary certificate (not substitute teachers, teacher's aides, etc.) with a minimum of two social studies courses as part of their assignment, may be given an Alternative Assignment (click on panel at right) at the first class meeting that they can complete in their school settings.
Alternative Assignment Master of Arts students (AAMAT) must submit a letter on school stationery signed by your principal or by e-mail from your principal on your school's official e-mail server (not AOL, etc.) detailing the following:
- That you are a full-time teacher (not a librarian, teacher's aide, instructional technologist, etc.) teaching at least two social studies courses as part of your teaching assignment.
- The beginning and ending dates of your employment contract with the school or school district. It must be at least one full semester.
- Your assignment: that is, what and who you are teaching and where.
- Your principal's name and phone number.
- You are advised to bring this documentation to the first class meeting so a determination can be made if you qualify.
Two Distinct Components
A. Microteaches will be completed under the auspices of a clinical instructor at a middle or high school.
- For each microteach, the student must have a detailed set of class notes based on the lesson format used in SSE 4333/5331 and the SSE 4335-5946 Microteach Packet and the course materials (handouts, overhead transparencies, primary documents, tests, rubrics, etc.) to support the microteach approved by the clinical instructor well in advance of the microteach.
- In the microteach, the student must demonstrate a command of a variety of instructional strategies, the content of the lesson, and leadership/management of the classroom setting (see Clinical Instructor Evaluation Form).
- A professional disposition as judged by the clinical instructor based on the student's approach to the clinical experience as a learning experience (see program Professional Disposition standards),
- The final microteach must also be videotaped compatible with a standard VHS VCR or DVD player and critiqued following the directions for the Reflection Paper (see later on this page).
B. "Portfolio Ready" Lesson Plans.
- "Portfolio Ready" Lesson Plans. will be submitted to the course instructor by the required date (click on schedule in right hand panel) in a large (9x12) envelope in order to be eligible for all points.
- The Portfolio Ready Lesson Plans submissions should be of such a high quality that undergraduates and graduate students (if they so choose) during their final semester will incorporate these lesson plans into their Employment Portfolio. See SSE 4335 Lewis and Clark Lesson Organizer Model as an example of the quality and detail required. Attachments should be of equal quality.
- The Portfolio Ready Lesson Plans must arrive at the time and date stated in the schedule (click on Microteach Schedules).
- Students who do not complete each and every assignment (microteach and portfolio ready lesson plans) as specified by the due dates will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment and their professional disposition points will also be affected unless there are documented reasons of a compelling nature (hospitalization, death in the immediate family, etc.).
- Late submissions should include a cover letter explaining the special circumstances and include any supporting documents.
- Consideration of requests for exceptions will take place at the end of the course.
- There are no opportunities to redo or resubmit a lesson plan, so it is in your interest to do it right the first time, every time.
- The Portfolio Ready Lesson Plans must be based on your Microteach topic and schedule and the materials used to teach it.
- A specific portfolio format (download SSE 4335-5946 Microteach Packet) will be used for submission of these plans, irrespective of the requirements of the clinical instructor for the class notes used to teach the microteach. This format should be familiar to you, as it was used in SSE 4333/5331.
- Portfolio Ready Lesson Plans must have detail and aesthetics comparable to the example SSE 4335 Lewis and Clark Lesson Organizer Model and include high quality, attractive facsimiles of the course materials (handouts, overhead transparencies, primary documents, tests, rubrics, etc.) based on those used in the microteach.
- These lesson plans will be evaluated by the course instructor along with the student's self-assessment of the microteaches and the videotaped microteach when determining grades.
Special Considerations for a Clinical Experience Course
Time is of the Essence
Due to the unique nature of a clinical experience in which the supportive sponsorship of the Clinical Instructor and school are relied upon, and the special obligation to the high/middle school students’ learning opportunities, preservice teachers enrolled in this course must meet all requirements and deadlines as specified in the syllabus. Having to teach 5 to 10 times in one semester will not permit delays, makeups, extensions, incompletes, or re-assignments.
Should a clinical instructor decide to terminate his or her supervision of a student because of a failure of the student to meet the expectations of the course and program, the student's only option is to withdraw or fail the course.
It is the Student's Responsibility to:
- Expeditiously contact the clinical instructor at the middle or high school by phone and e-mail immediately following the first class meeting.
- Arrange for the orientation meeting, “shadow day,” microteach dates and topics to be taught.
- Provide all forms (please complete the sections with your name, contact info, etc.), addressed envelopes, postage, videotape, etc. necessary for the microteach evaluation process.
- Provide the clinical instructor with lesson plans for review and approval well in advance of the date scheduled for the microteach.
- Anticipate and resolve any issues that have the potential to disrupt his or her completion of the course on schedule and as prescribed.
- Any problems (and your proposed solutions) should be reported to the Course Instructor, Dr. Cruz, immediately.
Special Provisions
- If a student fails to perform or is reported to be anything less than outstanding in managing his or her clinical experience and with positive interactions with the clinical and course instructors, the student will be informed that he or she must drop or withdraw from the course or receive an “F: in the course.
- Students who do not complete each and every assignment as specified by the due dates will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment and their Professional Disposition points will also be affected, unless there are documented reasons of a compelling nature (hospitalization, death in the immediate family, etc.). Late submission should include a cover letter explaining the special circumstances and any supporting documents. Consideration of requests for exceptions will take place at the end of the course.
- Students who do not complete all the assignments by the end of the course will receive an “F” in the course and will be required to re-enroll. Because it is a clinical course experience, there are no I grades and students must repeat the entire course in an upcoming semester.
- Only for documented reasons of the most serious nature (hospitalization, death in the immediate family, etc.) can a student petition the Course Instructor for an exception to the standards for this course and must do so within 24 hours of the event creating the need for an exception by submitting a typed, detailed petition and documentation (death notice, etc.) to the Course Instructor for review by the program faculty. However, there are no “I” grades in the course and all course work must be completed within the USF semester time frame under all circumstances.
- If all the NCSS Themes cannot be covered in five microteaches, additional microteaches must be arranged for and completed by the student within the time frame of the course. Grades for these additional microteaches will be scored as pass/fail but may also affect Professional Disposition points.
- All materials must be dropped off or mailed to the Secondary Education Office and all materials (lesson plans, tapes, etc.) should be picked up from the Projects Room (EDU 302T) in the Secondary Education office on a weekly basis. Projects and tapes not picked up within two weeks of the last day of university classes will be discarded.
Final Micro Teach Video
Video. The final microteach must be video-taped or recorded and placed on a tape or disc compatible with a standard VHS VCR player or computer/DVD player. You must critique your final microteach using the required Reflection Paper guidelines.
You need to arrange through your clinical instructor to borrow the equipment or bring it with you and decide who will actually serve as the videographer. The videographer could be a student in the class or the teacher or another student from this course.
NOTE: If you place the camera in the rear of the room, backs of students' head are videoed, but the students cannot be identified, thus you can avoid regulations regarding permission from parents for their children to be filmed. We suggest using a strategy where you are the only one who is identifiable so as to avoid the additional paperwork.
Reflection Paper on Video Lesson (also submitted to Chalk and Wire) must be:
- a typed, single-spaced, thoughtful analysis of your communication skills and how they led to a constructive learning environment;
- no more than 3 pages with a font size comparable to 12-point Times Roman;
- include three qualities as depicted in the videotaped lesson that you believe you did well on; and,
- include three qualities as depicted in the videotaped lesson that you would like to improve and a discussion of the strategies you will use to improve those.
ePortfolio/Chalk & Wire
Refection Paper on Video Micro Teach
Name this Artifact SSE 4335 [or SSE 5946] Refection on Video Micro Teach
- You must submit an electronic version simultaneously as an artifact to your ePortfolio using the software Chalk and Wire in addition to a paper version and video to the instructor.
