History

Grades 6 through Grade 12

Themes: U.S. History; World History

Abstract: .It is believed that the Spanish Civil War was THE opportunity for the world’s most powerful democracies to have taken a united stance against the aggressive acts of the authoritative governments that were taking root in Europe during the 1930s, but instead, they chose to appease hoping to avoid another world war. This lesson will afford students an opportunity to take a closer look at the Spanish Civil War, a topic that is generally overlooked in the curriculums, textbooks, and the overall dialog of the major events of the 1930s.  The Spanish Civil War is considered to be one of many example of appeasement by the western powers that eventually led to World War II.  This lesson will give students a brief overview the Spanish Civil War and call on them decide for themselves if the western democracies were justified in their call for “nonintervention”.
