Master
of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
Foreign Languages/ESOL
The MAT is a fast track (42 credit hours) program designed for
individuals who wish to become certified teachers in foreign
language at the elementary, middle, or high school level (K-12), in the following Languages: Spanish, French, German, Latin, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, or Russian. The MAT also provides students with the state-required ESOL
endorsement.
All the courses in the MAT program are taken in the College
of Education. The degree does not require any coursework
to be taken in the foreign language to be taught. For this
reason, this degree is most appropriate for native speakers
of the language or people with a strong proficiency in the language
to be taught.
Prospective applicants
to the MAT will be required to present evidence of the following:
- Native language proficiency or 30 credit hours in coursework
in the foreign language;
- An appropriate level of proficiency in the foreign language
as demonstrated by
- An interview with the program faculty (in person or by
telephone) AND/OR;
- An ACTFL OPI score of intermediate high or higher AND/OR;
- Any equivalent measure as approved by the program faculty.
Other admissions requirements can be found on the Admissions/ Registration webpage.
Field Experiences
and Internship
A gradual sequence
of field experiences is interwoven into the MAT program, culminating
in a semester-long internship in a public school. Successful
completion of the internship is required to graduate.
The College of Education places students in their internships
according to student preferences and school availability.
Application deadlines for internships are stringent, and students
should keep in mind that they will need to apply for
internship two semesters before the semester in which they
plan to intern. They will also need to attend
an internship orientation/workshop at that time.
Before students can graduate from the program, they will also
need to have passed the Florida Teacher Certification Exam
(FTCE). This state exam comprises two sections:
the Subject Area in the language (SAE) and the Professional
Education (Ped). Both sections need to be successfully
completed and on file by graduation time. Information
about the FTCE can be obtained in three ways:
-
-
at
the Student Academic Services Office in EDU 106E in the
College of Education,
-
or
by calling 1-800-445-6739.
A Graduate Orientation session is offered every semester for
admitted students. For more information, please visit
the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) website
