Background and Teaching
Dr. Marcela van Olphen received her M. A. in Spanish Linguistics and her Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education from Purdue University. Before coming to USF, Dr. van Olphen served as an Assistant Professor of Modern Language Education at the University of Wyoming. While in Wyoming, she taught foreign language methods and second language acquisition courses to student teachers as well as ESL classes at the Wind River Reservation. During the same period, she was responsible for supervising student foreign language teachers who were placed across Wyoming and in Colorado for their professional residencies.
Prior to coming to the United States, Dr. van Olphen earned her undergraduate degrees in elementary education, preschool and kindergarten education, and adult education in Argentina, her native country. She taught PK - 12 in urban (private and public) and rural schools for almost seven years in Buenos Aires province and has additional experience as a Spanish teacher at the elementary school level in both Indiana and Nebraska.
Dr. van Olphen is the recipient of teaching awards from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Purdue University, where she taught courses in all levels of Spanish language, literature in translation, culture, and foreign language methods.
Research and Scholarship
Her research interests include foreign language teacher education and the integration of technology in the curriculum, heritage learners, international education, and bilingual education. She has presented at several national and regional conferences and has been invited to conduct workshops for Argentinean foreign language teachers. In addition, she has done consulting work for Wyoming and Colorado school districts as well as at Purdue University.
Service
Dr. van Olphen has been very active in her profession and has served on several professional and university committees. She has also enjoyed the challenge of developing new curricula with the goal of meeting changing educational requirements.
