Dr. Carine M. Feyten is originally from Belgium and is fluent in five languages. Since August 2006 she is Dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions at Miami University. Previously she was with USF for 23 years. At USF she taught undergraduate, masters and doctorate-level courses in foreign language education, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). In addition, she was the Co-Director of the Second Language Acquisiton/Instructional Technology Ph.D. program. Dr. Feyten is still affiliated with USF through a courtesy appointment.
She spent the 1996-97 year on sabbatical leave at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium working at the "Leuven Institute for Innovative Learning (LINOV)," which operates as a think tank on issues related to technology and education.
Carine has won several teaching awards and one research award. She received the USF President's Award for Faculty Excellence in 2003. She is also the 2001 recipient of the prestigious Florence Steiner award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education-Postsecondary awarded by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
She was president of the Florida Foreign Language Association for 1992-1993 and the President for NNELL (National Network on Early Language Learning) in 2002-2003. She is currently the ACTFL representative on the National Research Advisory Board of the Alliance for Curriculum Reform.
An internationally recognized consultant and keynote speaker, she has delivered keynote addresses in Lisbon, Portugal; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Brussels, Belgium and has done consulting work for the International Baccalaureate Organization and other schools and educational institutions in places such as Cardiff, Wales; Brussels, Belgium; and Prague, Czech Republic.
Research
Dr. Feyten's research interests lie in the areas of listening, language learning/teaching methodologies, FLES, and the integration of technology into teaching. She is particularly interested in communication as it occurs across linguistic, ethnic, and cultural barriers. She has also pioneered a joint Ph.D. program with the Department of World Language Education integrating the areas of Second Language Acquisition/Teaching and Instructional Technology.
Dr. Feyten has authored or coauthored over 100 journal articles, conference papers, addresses, and book chapters. She has published extensively in journals such as The Modern Language Journal, Hispania, The Middle School Journal, Language Quarterly, and others. She is very interested in the integration/use of telecommunications and distance learning in the teaching of world languages.

What Else She Does
Dr. Feyten hosted an educational TV show on "Myths and Misconceptions About Language Learning" in 1994 and co-hosted two one-hour TV shows on "Oral Communication in Secondary Schools" and on "Learning Styles" in 1992.
She is an active member and officer in numerous professional associations and serves as a consultant to several school districts and other public and private agencies. In her free time, she is an avid traveler, a collector of pre-Columbian art, loves scuba diving and Cybersurfing, and is educating herself in alternative medicines.
