Teaching
Dr. Thompson
joined the USF faculty in 1990 and teaches undergraduate mathematics methods courses for elementary
and secondary education students as well as graduate courses
in mathematics education related to technology, assessment,
curriculum and the teaching of algebra. She has taught at
the middle school, high school and community college levels.
Research
and Publications
Her
research interests include curriculum development, assessment
issues, and the use of literature in the teaching of mathematics.
She is the author and editor for two high school textbooks
in the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project series.
She has also co-edited a book related to research about student
achievement in mathematics when using NSF-supported, standards-based
mathematics curricula.
Service
Dr.
Thompson regulary works in schools and is currently a math
consultant for Mt. Vernon Elementary School through its partnership
with Raymond James. Dr. Thompson is active professionally,
both at the state and national levels. She serves on Florida's
FCAT Content Advisory Committee for Mathematics and is the
Vice-President for College of the Florida Council of Teachers
of Mathematics. She currently serves on NCATE's Board of Examiners
and recently completed a term on the Editorial Panel of Mathematics
Teaching in the Middle School, serving as Chair of the panel
for two years. In addition, she was recently appointed to
co-edit a monograph for the Association of Mathematics Teacher
Educators and also to serve as co-editor for the mathematics
section of CITE (Contemporary Issues in Technology and Education),
an electronic journal. She is also on the Writing Team for
Navigations: Reasoning in Grades 3-6.
