Teaching

Dr. Thompson joined the USF faculty in 1990 and teaches undergraduate mathematics methods courses for elementary and secondary education students as well as graduate courses in mathematics education related to assessment, curriculum, and literacy in mathematics. She has taught at the middle school, high school, and community college levels.

 

Research and Publications

Her research interests include curriculum development, assessment issues, language issues related to mathematics, and the use of literature and culture in the teaching of mathematics. She is the author or co-author of 17 books, over 25 book chapters, and over 50 journal articles, and served as the monograph series editor for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators from 2005-2008.   She has also been involved with the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project in various capacities since 1985, serving as an author on the first and second editions of Advanced Algebra, as an editor for Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics (a text for which she conducted an evaluation for her dissertation), as an author of technical reports for the second edition evaluation studies, and most recently as the Director of Evaluation for the third editions of the secondary materials. She has presented at over 100 conferences, including the International Congress on Mathematics Education, annual and regional meetings of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education.

 

Service

Dr. Thompson is active professionally, both at the state and national levels. She has served on Florida's FCAT Content Advisory Committee for Mathematics.  She has been on the Board of Directors for the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics from 2000-2010, serving as Vice-President for College (2000-2006), President-Elect (2007), President (2008-2009), Past President (2010), and co-editor of the Council’s journal (2002-2009).  She has also served on NCATE's Board of Examiners and on  the Editorial Panel of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, serving as Chair of the panel for two years.   Currently, she is serving on the Nominations and Elections Committee for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2010-2012).


Honors

In 2004, Dr. Thompson was named the Kenneth Kidd Mathematics Educator of the Year from the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In 2010, she was named Mathematics Teacher Educator of the Year from the Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
