Dr. Sears is an assistant professor at the University of South Florida. She obtained a Master’s degree from Indiana University - Bloomington, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Missouri - Columbia. She coordinates developmental mathematics courses (Introduction to College Mathematics and Intermediate Algebra) and is the coordinator of the doctoral program in mathematics education.


As a mathematics teacher educator, her goal is to develop transformative, exceptionally skilled teachers who possesses an advanced understanding of mathematics, are abreast of curriculum issues, can cultivate mathematical habits of mind, facilitate reasoning and proof discourse, embrace diversity, and promote equity. Hence, her instructional efforts and service activities seek to develop effective teachers, who promote education for all, while strengthening pipelines for underrepresented minorities to pursue careers in STEM Education.  


Dr. Sears scholarly activities focus on curriculum issues, reasoning and proof, and preservice teacher preparation. She has presented nationally and internationally, and has published in leading mathematics education journals, such as: Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, ZDM: The International Journal on Mathematics Education, MathAMATYC Educator, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Perspective of Mathematics Education (APME). 


Additionally, Dr. Sears is the APLU- Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership sub-research action cluster (RAC) leader for clinical experiences that utilizes co-teaching and co-planning strategies. She is also the Florida Department of Education – State Course Numbering System (SCNS) Discipline Coordinator in the field of Mathematics Education, a member of The University of South Florida STEER Transformation Implementation Leadership Team (TILT), the board member from Public Institution for the Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, and a board member for PACE Bahamas Foundation.

Dr. Sears is the 2016 Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educator (FAMTE) - Mathematics Teacher Educator of the Year, and she currently volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay.
