Dr. Howes, Assistant Professor of Science Education, is in the Department of Secondary Education of the College of Education at the University of South Florida, where she serves as the advisor for the Masters Programs. Dr. Howes arrived at the University of South Florida in the fall of 2003.
She has taught
undergraduate elementary science methods, student teacher seminars,
and the reading in the content area course for secondary preservice
teachers and graduate courses. Dr. Howes's research interests
are focused in:
- "Science for all," particularly for girls in science education
- Cultural and language diversity in science education
- Science teacher education (preservice and inservice)
- Environmental science education
Dr. Howes' research regularly
takes place in urban settings. Her latest efforts in this regard
will begin in the fall of 2004, where she will combine all of
her interests in studying an innovative interdisciplinary course
for preservice elementary teachers taught by Dr. Zeidler and
Dr. King (in literacy education).
Dr. Howes is also beginning
a study at USF's Professional Development School (Pizzo Elementary)
in which teachers are implementing a science program meant to
encourage the participation of girls and children of color in
science. She is the author of Connecting Girls and Science (Teachers
College Press, 2002).
