Professional Experience
Newly arrived at USF, Dr. Downey is an Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology in the Department of Secondary Education. Specializing in multimedia, Steve teaches courses in interactive media, instructional graphics, and digital video.
Prior to his arrival Steve served as a Research Scientist for the University of Illinois’ National Center for Supercomputing Applications, home to the first commercial web browser, Mosaic. While at Illinois, Steve taught graduate and undergraduate courses on instructional technology, instructional design for online environments, and knowledge management for the highly ranked College of Education and Graduate School for Library & Information Science. Steve also taught and conducted research overseas and was a Fulbright Scholar finalist for work in Thailand and southeast Asia.
Steve’s research focuses on the adaptation of massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) technologies to online learning. In addition to his MMOG research, he has conducted research on cultural influences on e-Learning and knowledge management as well as designing and development of online learning and collaboration systems.
