Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek is a Full Professor and the Coordinator of USF’s undergraduate Exercise Science program. Under her leadership, the Exercise Science program was completely revised with 17 new professional development courses that were implemented in 2005. The Exercise Science program has earned “endorsement” from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) by meeting the high quality standards established by the ACSM. At her former institution, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, she developed and coordinated a master’s degree program in Health and Fitness Management and received the College of Education’s Outstanding Teaching Award.
Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek is the lead author of a new groundbreaking, comprehensive textbook titled Risk Management for Health/Fitness Professionals: Legal Issues and Strategies. Published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, this is the first textbook to address the law, legal liability, and risk management principles designed specifically for exercise science and health/fitness students and professionals. Dave Herbert, J.D. and Dan Connaughton, Ed.D. are co-authors.
Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek also has published 67 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters, and over 75 other professional publications. She is invited or competitively selected to present her research at several national conferences and other professional meetings or seminars each year. Since 2000, Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek has served as an Associate Editor and the Legal Columnist for ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal. Prior to becoming a full-time academician in 1994, Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek worked as a health/fitness manager in various settings (e.g., community, clinical, and educational) for nearly 20 years. Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek is an active member of professional organizations having served in numerous elected and appointed leadership positions at the national level for 30 years. She recently served on the International Board of Directors as Co-Chair of the Education Committee for the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP). Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek is an ACSM certified Health/Fitness Director, Exercise Test Technologist, and Health Fitness Specialist and is a Fellow of the ACSM and the former AWHP.
