Educational Leadership & Policy Studies

Education Specialist (Ed.S.)

The Education Specialist program in Educational Leadership prepares individuals for leadership positions in schools, K-12.  It is an advanced graduate degree program; the Ed.S. Degree is ranked one step above the Master's Degree and one step below the Doctoral Degree.

Admissions for the Specialist program occur concurrently with the Doctoral program, approximately once per year. 

Admissions Requirements

Applicants to the Program must:

  • Have an official GRE score of 1000 (verbal plus quantitative), or a minimum GRE score of 800 (v. plus q.) and a GPA in the Master's degree of at least 3.5;

  • Hold a Master's degree from an accredited institution; 

  • Hold a Florida Professional Educator's Certificate in Educational Leadership (K-12);
  • Submit three letters of recommendation from persons knowledgeable about the applicant's academic and professional competence;

  • One-page writing sample (goals statement)

Program of Study

The Ed.S. Degree program requires 15 semester hours of major course work at the Doctoral level, 9 semester hours at the Master's or advanced graduate level, and 3 semester hours of course work in the area of research methods.  A thesis/project is also required (9 semester hours) for a minimum total of 36 semester hours' credit.  There is also a comprehensive examination required.  The student must have a supervisory committee consisting of three faculty members credentialed for advanced graduate committee work.

EDA 7222 - Administration of School Personnel Policies (3)

EDA 7233 - Legal Dimensions of School Administration (3)

EDA 7247 - Advanced School Finance (3)

EDS 7130 - Teacher Evaluation (3)

EDG 7667 - Analysis of Curriculum and Instruction (3)

    OR

EDG 7692 - Issues in Curriculum and Instruction (3)

                                               

Specialization Electives

These courses may be taken at the Master's and/or Advanced Graduate levels from the areas of Educational Leadership, K-12; Higher Education-Community College, Adult or Vocational Education; or Instructional Technology for a minimum of 9 hours.
 

Core Elective

Coursework from the Measurement and Research Department for a minimum of 3 hours.
 

Thesis/Project:  

EDA 6971  -  9 hours

Minimum Grand Total for the Program:  36 hours

Note: A written comprehensive examination is also required.

Additional Program Information

Certification in Educational Leadership is not offered through the Ed.S. degree.  If you are interested in Educational Leadership certification, please visit the certification only section of the website.  Once certification is obtained, 3-4 courses may be transferable to an Ed.S. program.  Contact an advisor for more information.
