Susan Homan is Professor Emerita at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Her areas of expertise include adolescent struggling readers, emergent literacy, and diagnosis. She has co-authored several books and published over 30 articles in the literacy education field. The 5th edition of her book, Linking Reading Assessment and Instruction (co-authored with Dr. Arleen Mariotti) was published in 2009.
She was the first recipient of the Marguerite Cogorno Radencich Award recognizing university faculty who are innovators and leaders making substantial contributions in the field of reading education. In addition, in 2007, she was selected to receive the Outstanding Alumna Achievement Award from the University of Florida.
Over the past four years her research has focused on evaluating interventions for struggling readers. She has received over $700,000 from the FLDOE to study Tune Into Reading (TiR), an innovative reading intervention for struggling readers.
Dr. Homan is the Director of the Literacy Innovation for Education (LIFE) Initiative, which is housed at the University of South Florida. The goal of the LIFE Initiative is to help educators purchase literacy innovations for the classroom. Businesses contribute to the LIFE initiative providing a link between business and education that benefits struggling readers and the community.
