                     Program Coursework

Specialization Courses. Students in the program have to take at least 12 hours at the 7000-level, or 6000-level courses requiring advanced graduate standing. To meet the specialization requirements, students have to take a required curriculum course and the minimum number of dissertation research hours. The rest of the specialization coursework is to be completed in EVT related courses.

Required Curriculum Course (3 hours). Students are required to select one course featuring curriculum and instruction content. Examples of courses include:

EDG 7667 (Analysis of curriculum and instruction,3 hours)

EDG 7692 (Issues in curriculum and instruction,3 hours)

EDH 7225 (Curriculum in higher education, 3 hours).

This course is to be determined by students depending on their individual interest and schedule.

Required Dissertation Research Hours (24 hours). All students have to meet this requirement and enroll in the appropriate EVT 7980 Dissertation course as they work on their dissertation.

EVT Specialization Courses (18 hours). The following courses (3 hours each) represent a sample of courses that qualify for specialization in Career and Workforce Education. Students will be able to choose from these and other eligible courses.Other relevant courses may be eligible for career and workforce education specialization with the advisor’s approval.

Foundations Courses. As an specialization within the Curriculum and Instruction program, the students are required to complete 7-8 credit hours of coursework that builds upon psychological and social foundations of education. These courses provide a broad educational base serving as the foundations for specialization coursework.

Cognate Courses. Depending upon individual interests, each student selects a cognate area that clearly complements the core emphasis in CWE. Some students may choose a series of courses in adult education if their career goals lead to positions connected to designing, implementing, and evaluating training programs in the community or in the private sector, or to pursue related scholarship in academic positions. Other students may choose a series of courses in higher education tied to the role of community colleges in workforce development. In any case, whether the cognate area is grounded in other programs in the Department of Adult, Career and Higher Education or in other program in the College of Education and beyond in the University of South Florida, students must show the relevancy to career goals.

Research Courses. The Ph.D. in Career and Workforce Education is a research program that requires strong foundations in analytical inquiry. Students in the program must complete two complementary statistics courses and take 1-3 additional courses focusing on research design and other areas to prepare them for dissertation work and future scholarly contributions in the field. Selection of these courses will be made in agreement with the academic advisor. Typically, students in the program take 12 hours of research courses. The required and elective courses available in the research sequence are:
